That leaves room for 3 or 4 reunion or surprise songs.

Any post-reunion song they play
will have been played on the 2010 leg.

And Iron Maiden
doesn't play surprise songs.

I'd like to talk a bit about songwriting itself, and perhaps why some songs don't get live performances.

New Frontier is written from Nicko's point of view, influenced by his Christian beliefs. Bruce recorded this song, contrary to his beliefs, but this song wasn't played live.
On the other hand, Starblind is written from Bruce's points of view, and this song's lyrics are in opposition to religious dogmas. Nicko recorded the track in studio, but wouldn't it be difficult for him to perform it live, due to his beliefs?

He doesn't have much of a problem with Steve's pagan-influenced work, to be fair.

I think it's more along the lines that the band has put together these very progressive, very specific tracks and doesn't want to play them live, due to them being (I imagine) rather difficult.

Yeah, they had huge problems with Paschendale during last year's tour, so they eventually scrubbed it from the setlist. They also had problems during the DOD tour, but they played it anyway since (I'm guessing) it was an album staple.

I always had an impression they didn't practice much prior, and made mistakes with a rather difficult song, that they haven't played in last 5 years. Do you have any clips where they did mistakes during DOTR tour?
And, AFAIK, they play base tracks from beginning to end at recording sessions, no cuts, clicktracks, etc. So matter of them playing difficult song is how much time they spend practicing before the tour.

I don't think that's true.

In fact, reading the tour book from that tour, Paschendale was the song everybody enjoyed playing most. I can't imagine that this song was mentioned if they had problems with it, nor do I recall mistakes on bootlegs.

Correct me if I'm wrong of course. :)

Yeah, I would imagine it would most likely be
Brave New World

I like to hope that one day they will surprise us :P

I don't want to sound arrogant but some of us know at least 80% of the setlist.

Oh I know, I'm pretty sure what they are going to play.  Pretty much everything except for the new songs.  But again, there is more to a Maiden show than just the songs as odd as that sounds.

I'd love to see a surprise song this tour though, something unexpected even if it's been done before.  Something like

Flight of Icarus or Die With Your Boots On

would be a nice treat although I wouldn't expect it.

I'm not seeing any shows this tour, so in the end the only way this tour affects me is what will be on the live DVD in a few years.  B)

Which is not much. They usually meet up for about a week or two and do run downs of the setlist. Most of these songs are on the backbone of course, but they just run down the set, playing at 90% effort maybe, just to get the feeling back and playing themselves warm before the proper tour starts.

I enjoy listening to starblind and playing it on guitar. Do I agree with the lyrics? Kind of but not 100%. I think boycotting a song because of you don't agree with the writers beliefs is immature and just plain stupid.

well a lot of these were played on the last tour and chances are they will be played again.

no that tour isn't over. It is still the final frontier tour and I think the setlists will be relatively similar.
