Simon Dawson is the new drummer

I wouldn't be so harsh on Steve Lazarus. Yes, these were bad comments, shouldn't have posted that, but I kinda understand the guy's disappointment. It's not like there was no premise to hope his son gets the gig. Let's also remember Joe is not his father, so I don't see how those comments prove Joe himself would bring any kind of drama to the band. Overall, I think this situation is probably not a threat to the band's PR in the mainstream.

IMO Joe Lazarus would be a better pick. I don't see how him being able to replicate Nicko's style perfectly is suddenly a bad thing. This isn't supposed to be a new band member, they're not going to reinvent themselves or change the sound in any way. It's too late. This could have been a conversation 20 years ago. Right now they don't need a new identity, the new live drummer has to do justice to Nicko's (and Clive's) material. I think Joe would be the better pick for music, for the songs. Perhaps Steve Harris thinks Simon is a better pick for the band for some reason, who knows. We don't know the whole picture.

"I fuckin play with him in fuckin British fuckin Lion, he is the only fuckin drummer I want to fuckin play with if fuckin Nicko retires"
I tend to think this is how it went more or less. I don't want to say it was the "laziest", but it certainly was the simplest choice from Steve's perspective.

The thing is that Simon Dawson's pedigree as a drummer isn't even close to being big enough to completely shut all of this down. The problem is that the first gig is 6 months away and there will be a lot of talk until then, when Simon will have the chance to prove himself.

That said, I think we don't know the whole background.
I feel like this is a part of why they really should've waited with the announcement until we're closer to the tour's start and maybe uploaded like a video of Dawson in action playing Maiden songs to shut the naysayers up preemptively.

My thoughts too. I sincerely hope that they have played together already.

I think people are putting a bit too much importance on some random Facebook posts. It's Facebook in 2024 (almost 2025), it barely has any relevance. Joe isn't going to lose a potential future gig because his dad ranted a bit on a social media site that has fallen out of relevance. Is it a good look? Of course not, but that's all there is to it. Just an old dude being frustrated and ranting a bit. I can't imagine a world where Maiden HQ would pay any attention to social media ramblings.

I would have thought Joe but Steve has been playing a lot live with Simon over the years so that makes sense. I'm sure he wouldn't get the gig if they didn't think he can do the job so I'm will to give the benefit of the doubt on this one.

Probably, but I can't imagine how Dawson handles the Maiden parts on his tiny drum kit. Maybe they'll use the original Nicko's kit produced by British Drum Co?

Airing dirty laundry in public is the least classy thing you can do. I had to deal with something at work recently. Whoever gets in first with their comment will always come across as the party who has been tested poorly.

To be honest, I couldn’t care less if Joe is a better drummer than Simon or if there were retainers in the past. We all know what Steve is like plus it’s his band. He can’t do whatever he wants. Winging about it won’t change it. Just be sodding grateful you can see the band at least one more time.

All I have heard of British Lion is so bland and uninspired
I totally agree, but I don't see how this is the drummer's fault.
I mean, Gogmagog's I Will Be There EP sucked majorly, and it had Paul Di'anno, Clive Burr, Janick Gers, Pete Willis and Neil Murray.

True, but that is the only material I have to judge from.

I disagree with that. You want to work with professionals you can trust. The info that Joe has been available in the background for a few years may be relatively harmless, but who knows what someone who is like that will reveal next if he is upset about something?
A lot of things have to be carefully kept secret until the big announcement for effect. Some things that happen internally should never be revealed to anyone because it would not fit in with the band's image.
Someone like that in your circle is a recipe for trouble.
