Senjutsu - 3rd September 2021

I'm curious if Senjutsu will have any Japanese/Asian style melodies incorporated into it because I don't think they've ever tried this before. The farthest away from traditional Western musical language Maiden have travelled is probably the Middle Eastern melodies of The Nomad or Powerslave.

Japanese style musicality will be a completely new approach for them and I just hope they can pull it off and not sound like a bunch of embarrassing granddad's making cliche oriental music.

That's a good point. Japanese style melodies may not translate so well to guitar. What might be cool though is if Nicko got a little experimental with a Kodo style drum?

Remember Rush leaned in to some Asian sounds/ instruments on their song “tai shan “ back on the hold your fire album. It got mixed’ reviews to say the least. I thought it was ok. But I can totally see a bit of this on Senjutsu. Could be very cool if done right…

Eh, Janick will probably just play another Celtic jig in the middle of the song and call it a day. :ninja:

although 'The Lonely Shepard' by Gheorghe Zamfir from Kill Bill soundtrack is a stunning piece of music....amazing blend of
East and West. Anyways, like someone said here...it's likely to be an ambient thing at the beginning of Senjutsu track....then into Maiden mode with a few nods to Asia in the lyrics.

If I had to guess, one or two songs might have a very slight asian-y motif in the guitar licks. But I expect nothing substantial to either upset folks or that would stretch Maiden’s abilities.

I think only the title track will have this kind of melodies - the sounds in the promo video for the new album. It will be a 1-2 minutes long intro, I guess.

Upon the first gaze at the tracklisting (when the album was announced) I could not help but think that Stratego would be nice and so fitting title for instrumental.
Besides, of course it can't be instrumental when thinking of how long time ago they last did instrumental, well you never know for sure, but I think that they seriously could have done even one more instrumental after the last time (1984).
By the way, there's more of these kind of pics of Yngwie but I picked just one here that you get the idea. :)

I've always hoped for one myself, but Harris seems to have gone down a lyric/story heavy route then earlier days. I've loved some of the recent instrumentals by Ghost (Genesis and Miasma, check those tracks out). Maiden have always been keen to explore longer and more complex instrumental passages...so it's a little odd to me that it hasn't resulted in at least 1 instrumental track since 84. Judging from the blurry shots of album lyrics, I don't think we are getting one this time either

I'm not sure about that -> Bruce: ''There’s also one or two songs which sound pretty different to our usual style, and I think Maiden fans will be surprised - in a good way, I hope!''

Yep, I like those Ghost tracks too (been to Ghost since the debut Opus Eponymous came out). Nice instrumentals bring break and little variation in middle of the albums.
Anyways, I've secrectly hoped to hear new Maiden instrumental. Odd they've had few but stopped those after Losfer Words (Big 'Orra).
Sratego could be instrumental but the track lasts 4:59 which is (in Maiden norms perhaps) too long track to be instrumental. The title would be perfect for instrumental..
