Russia invades Ukraine

On the morning of 24th February 2022, the Russian army invaded Ukraine by orders of the Russian dictator Vladimir Putin. The contempt the Russian regime has for humanitarian values, the independence of sovereign nations and the right for people to live in freedom, is now open for all the world to see.

Please use this thread for further discussion of this shameful event.

Please also allow me to be crystal clear about this: We allow diverging opinions. We allow the discussion of these opinions. We will however not allow the posting of lies, fake news, or Russian propaganda, unless it is obviously meant to be discussed for what it is. If we have reason to believe somebody is posting as a Russian troll, we will ban without warning.

Guy in the car survived, I saw a video.

I read a post on LinkedIn by a CEO of some Murican company saying the company is paying for relocation of both Russian and Ukrainian employees, and then some guy came in the comments and said it's just "draining Ukraine of all the talent" and how people should stay put and fight. Although now you can't leave the country if you're a man between 18 and 60 years old anyway. What do you guys think about this?

Rhetoric question from one of Twitter users:
"Can someone explain to me why Bin Laden, who blew up two skyscrapers, is an international terrorist, but a creature bombing cities in the center of Europe is not?"

So far Europe and even USA looks weak. Putin was right in his thinking. Ukrainians needs lethal arms. NOW.

Bin Laden didn't have nukes.

And You think, if Putin will not be stopped now, he will not use nukes factor in near Future? For example, when he wants to seize Baltics? He is a Mob of a degrading country. All he can do is war. There is an old saying:

First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist.
Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out— because I was not a trade unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

So if media are correct, Putin's hesitantly ready to talk with Selenski, whom he might accept as the president of a "neutral" Ukraine. I think the reaction against Russia invading Ukraine was in large parts of the world much stronger than Putin had expected, and there's renewed talk that his behaviour was a plain miscalculation.

Don't know if it's entirely true, but there's info: Ukraine’s Defense Ministry: Russia has sustained estimated 800 fatalities in combat. That's very bad for Putin. In first two days. It realy can be miscalculation from his side. Maybe russians really thought, they will be greeted with flowers in Ukraine?

Disagree. He shown the Ukraine the west is not able to defend it and its not able to provide any meaningful support. If he forces Zelensky to sign down they won't join NATO it's "a win" for him. They'll hide their losses in secrecy and claim they were shooting Nazis throughout this invasion. They won't lose much PR.

You all need to look at his corpus of voters and sympathizers and lay off the rhetoric that this is mad man pulling strings in his final hours - it's counterproductive to us and only us alone. He is doing this because he has certain approval and it's worth to see what he's claiming to do in front of his audience.

He did what he did in Georgia, shown that the NATO is just rhetorics and they won't really fire 1 bullet if it's not their member states involved.

General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine

#stoprussia
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said yesterday about Russia's invasion of Ukraine that Europe hasn't seen anything like this in 75 years. And this is the truth. But that's not the whole truth.
It's not just Russia's invasion of Ukraine, it's the beginning of a war against Europe. Against the unity of Europe. Against elementary human rights in Europe. Against all rules of coexistence on the continent. Against the fact that European states refuse to share, namely to divide borders by force.
For the second day the city of Ukraine has suffered rocket-bomb strikes. Tank columns and aircraft are as similar as possible to what Europe has seen for a long time - during World War II and what was talked about "never again". But there it is! There it is again. At the moment. In the year 2022. 75 years after the end of World War II.
I'm sure you can see it - all of you, all of Europe. But we don't see what you're going to do about it. How are you going to defend yourself when you are so slowly helping us in Ukraine?
I will list what has already happened. And for that we give thanks. Sectoral sanctions. The United States, Canada, Great Britain, EU, Australia and New Zealand have imposed exactly the same, sectoral, sanctions against Russia. Especially against all the biggest banks. Against the largest Russian enterprises. Against Russia's access to Western technologies.
But Russian tanks are still shooting at residential buildings in our cities. Armored technology is still attacking, including civilians. Ordinary citizens of Ukraine.
Europe has enough power to stop this aggression. What else to expect from European countries?
Cancellation of visas for Russians? Shut down from SWIFT? Complete isolation of Russia? Recall of ambassadors? An oil embargo? Closing the sky out? Today, all this must be on the table because it is a threat to us, all of us, all of Europe. There is still a way to stop the aggression. You have to act without delay.
Ordinary people can act, I'm sure, in every country of the world, in every European country. Go out to the squares of your cities and demand peace for Europe, peace for Ukraine, stop this war. Come out, go to the square and demand the war to end. This is a right we have. It is your right to.
When bombs fall in Kiev, it happens in Europe, not only in Ukraine. When rockets kill our people, it's the death of all Europeans. Demand more protection for Europe, more protection for Ukraine as part of a democratic world.
Until the state institutions in Europe rush to make really strong decisions, every European in their capital can already come to our embassy and offer their help. Demand also from your governments that Ukraine receive more - more financial, more military assistance. Because this help is help to you. Because this is help to Europe. You are only helping your own self.
If you are in Europe with combat experience and do not want to look at the indecision of politicians, you can come to our state and together with us defend Europe, where it is now very much needed.
You've already been gas blackmailed. You've already been put to shame. You already want to split and divide just as they try to divide Ukraine today.
Protect yourself. Just like how we protect ourselves.
I want to address the President of the Russian Federation once again. Fights are taking place throughout Ukraine. Let's sit down at the negotiating table. To stop the deaths of human beings.
And now I want to address the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Stand firm. You are all we have. You are all that protects our country.
Glory to Ukraine!

The more all of this sinks in, the more I find the footage from the people in Ukraine relatable and the more I realise that the people I love and I aren't all that far away from this and that I'm actually making plans for a worst case, the more I understand that being "sick with fear" isn't just a figure of speech.

I can't, I'm stressed out. I want to follow what's happening but the more I do the more sick I feel because there is absolutely nothing else one can do.

If I come here, and I come here 350 days a year, I have to be ignoring this thread in order not to click on it and if I click then I'll be off on reddit or somewhere else where there's absolute full coverage and then rest of my day is fucked.

See, countries don't have emphaty after all, only people do. So while we're fighting here what NATO is or isn't or what it should or shouldn't do, they entirely, as in alliances, countries, entirely see the world through objectives and goals. And when some of that falls flat they revert to some other plan, some other contingency while we're left to doom and gloom and personal processing of what the fuck just happened.

President of Ukraine and leadership, seem, I'm not familiar with them much, but they seem like people's people, distanced from the realpolitik. And they made a mistake thinking their new friends are just that. Now they're left alone.

Putin urges ukranian forces to remove the government from office, in order to make any bilateral talks productive.

Yeah, it obviously isn't going as well as Putin had hoped.

At the same time he's once again warning Sweden and Finland, to not join NATO.

that russians are ready to negotiate with Zelensky in Belarus

My friend I'm afraid, and I'd very much to be wrong here, that Ukraine is in no shape to fight them and he'll probably think hard about signing anything put in front of him.

This is where it plays out for Crimea. Russians will ask Ukraine recognizes Crimea, Ukraine does not go into NATO, some degree of autonomy for Donbass but it'll be traded in so Zelensky can save face, claim a trade and averted war.

He is not a mad psycho, he is a calculated monster. He knows he has to leave room for Ukraine to claim at least a stalemate.
