Fuck the Norwegian CAA. Seriously.
Three weeks ago, no, FOUR weeks ago, I went to an aeromedical clinic to have my medical certificate renewed. I was notified that it was now time for me to get a pair of glasses. Well, fine, I thought, I had been considering that for the last year anyway, and I'm 40 so it's not like it's surprising.
But: The examiner also commented my strabismus (i.e. eyes not perfectly aligned. When I look straight ahead with one eye, the other will look slightly to the side and upwards) and said that this should actually have been noted by the examiner who issued my initial medical, five years ago. Since I had been flying for four years without any problem, he didn't expect that to be an issue but to be safe, he would check with the CAA ...
The next day I was told that the CAA had concluded I needed to consult an eye specialist for an assessment, plus I had to do a medical flight test with an instructor. Fine, I should perhaps have done that five years ago? The clinic helped me schedule an appointment with eye specialist, he saw this as a formality - no issues once I get glasses. Two days later I did the medical flight test, no problem.
So, what's the problem? Well, the problem is the papers were sent to the CAA shortly after that flight test. That was on the 29th of September ... after the aeromedical clinic has now contacted the CAA several times, AND asked if I could have a temporary permit (the CAA said no) I decided I'd contact the CAA myself.
First I called them last Friday. I was told the office for medical assessments was open for phone calls Tuesdays and Thursdays 0930 to 1100 ... and the lady who did answer the phone didn't have access to the system where she could check the status of my case. So I called them again today at 0930 ... and was told that the entire group was in a meeting!!! Way to go, schedule your meetings in the tiny window where the public can reach you by phone.
At least I was given the mobile number of one of the medical assessment department at the CAA, so that I could get in touch with someone who had access to my case. I sent a text asking that person to call me, which she did two hours later. And what could she tell me? Yes, that they had received the papers needed to assess my case 11 days ago. And that currently, the expected time for them to process class 2 medical certificate cases was ...
THIRTHY TREE DAYS! 33! A fucking month for something everyone else thought was a formality. And for that entire time, I am limited to fly with an instructor.
Fuck off!
