And some just get caught in a rut. Getting them out of this is sometimes, for them, a step in the right direction.
Very few and VERY far between. But yes some are just down on their luck...

Well, a lot of them walk around picking up trash anyway. Might as well pay them for it, give them a little incentive.

I have one guy pick up employees that don't have a ride. They give him some gas money. I give him some cash, food and all the free coffee he can drink. He also watches the lot for undesirables and the back door when we get our deliveries. The other guy does odd jobs that the maitenence man does'nt want to do. He als makes money from the truckers by polishing the chrome on their trucks. Some people at work don't like that I let them there but they don't bother anybody and they pay for what they take. The maitenence man hates it but I tell him that the homeless guy does more work than him, and that if the homeless guy would stay sober he would have his job. They don't ask for handouts. They are just a couple of guys who are down on their luck.

Wait, wait... you have a bum... watching out for OTHER bums? HAHAHAHAHAHA

The bums are my KGB. I had one help me catch a shoplifter today. The guy is going to jail for 8 airfreshners. But someone else got away with 2 radar detectors, for now. I saw who it was on the video and the night clerk told me he has been hanging around the truckstop for about a week.  I told her if he comes back to call the police first then me so I can run down there with the DvD I already made of him breaking into my electronics case. I have inventory next Friday and I think it will be bad. <_<

Inventory is always bad.  Man, people steal like motherfuckers from stores.  It's just insane.

OH, yes!  At my shop, i have caught tons of employees stealing stuff... blatantly and horribly, and expensively!  One guy took $400 worth of engine parts home to work on a guy's four wheeler.  The boss never seemed to care, he caught that guy red handed and said "well, just don't let it happen again"... yeah, right.

That's what I ws going to say, it's usually the employees stealing from establishments more than anything.

All the years I worked in retail, I never stole a thing.  We were sometimes given stuff, sandwiches at the end of the night, expired chips, things going into the trash, but I never stole a thing.  I know people who stole insane amounts, though.

Yeah, I saw lots of that... now, with the new guy, none of that is happening, and I dont expect it to.  We always had a deal that we could use the 'bulk oil' for our personal bike oil changes, but that was a given, and not a taken.

I knew a guy that worked at the frozen yogurt store in the foodcourt at the local mall that had a huge scam going. Inventory was taken by weight, so he shorted all of the customers on the product, over-charged them and worked out the math so that it would all come out in the wash in regards to the inventory. Crazy fucker, he never got caught but bragged about it all the time. I think by the time it was over, he made out with more than $10,000 on the deal.

I downloaded the Dear Leader's biography, and I haven't had such a good laugh in ages.  North Korea is one of the funniest organizations in the world.

Backwards people, that's for sure. My brother was stationed in South Korea in the late 80's. He said he was part of the speed bump.

I caught one girl red handed. But I was only a department manager then and her husband's grandmother was our accountant and got it quashed. Now the grandmother has been promoted out to field manager and I was promoted to site general manager I am waiting patiently like a spider in his web to bag her again. This girl was promoted to book keeper and has stolen drops from the safe because the old GM gave the book keepers autonomy. The first thing that I did was to have the department managers accompany the book keepers to the drop safes, and they both count and check the drops against the logs. Guess what? Since then not one drop has vanished. i can rant about this girl for hours because she has worked there as long as I have and has been robbing us blind. She was always playing the Grandmother card whenever she got in trouble. But even if the grandmother was still at my site I would'nt give two shits about cracking down on her. The Grandfather is our maitenence man too, and I thought he'd quit when I got the big chair at work. I make sure he has plenty to do.

LOL. I too have never stolen from work. I borrow, so much more honest. "Yo boss, cool if I take this book for a week?" "Sure." "Thanks."
