I wouldn't mind an album in the vein of A Fair Judgement or Face Of Melinda. Heavy, epic & metal even without growling.

I'd like that too, NP. And I actually expect the new album to be in that vein.

Blackwater Park is my favorite Opeth song right now, with Deliverance, Face of Melinda, Harlequin Forest and Windowpane following.

Mine is Bleak, followed by Deliverance and Ghost of Perdition. Usually the top three stays the same, everything else is harder to decide.

Top 10 in no particular order: The Moor, Godhead's Lament, Face Of Melinda, Serenity Painted Death, Bleak, Harvest, The Drapery Falls, Blackwater Park, Deliverance, Master's Apprentices.

Hard to pick a favorite from Damnation; that whole album is like one long song for me. I rarely listen to songs from it separately, usually I just play the whole thing.

Top song for me is, and always will be, Ghost of Perdition. A perfect Opeth song.

I don't mind the death metal getting thrown out 'cause Mikael's growls suck now... Just the whole transition from their own original style to retro 70's prog rock.

I hear no difference in the growls. The idea of growl critiques is humorous to me to begin with...it's literally grunting. Sounds no different to me today than it did years ago. But, you know, I don't really listen to any other bands with growls, so I'm not exactly a "growl connoisseur".

I wouldn't mind another album in the vein of Watershed. There are plenty of great metal moments that are also sung cleanly.

Although better than Heritage, WS feels very patchwork. There's great moments, for sure, but nothing that is really memorable except, oddly enough, "Coil". From a songwriting perspective, it's like Opeth's Death Magnetic.

Fine by me; all you could hear was BASS!!!

Bleh. The mix on that album was terrible. I don't dislike it like others do, but the production leaves a lot to be desired.

I like it a lot. I used to think of it as feeling patchwork too but lately I've really warmed up to it. It's a bit all over the place stylistically, which makes it difficult to listen to at times, but it still feels cohesive to me. My only complaint is that Hex Omega is a very anticlimactic closer. In fact it's probably the only song on the album I dislike.

I'd say the first three songs and Hessian Peel are top 20 Opeth for me.

Roadrunner confirmed that this is the new artwork. Better than Heritage, but still doesn't look like an Opeth cover to me.

I like the artwork, but obviously they have abandoned the "black and white blurred image" convention now.

I'd say the first three songs and Hessian Peel are top 20 Opeth for me.

"The Lotus Eater" is awesome. Crowd went nuts when I saw it live.

Top song for me is, and always will be, Ghost of Perdition. A perfect Opeth song.
Agree it's great, though I think I like "Harlequin Forest" the best off that album.

Pretty cool artwork. After abandoning death metal, the change in artworks doesn't seem too out of place to me.

Wow, pretty straight forward for Opeth. Reminds me of Rush at times but pretty much a full on heavy metal song.

I could learn to like that song, I think. Once again, the production is really mid-heavy. Even though he's not screaming, I still wish the guitars sounded like metal guitars. They sound barely distorted, which pulls most of the dynamics out of the song.

I like the guitar sound, but Mikael's vocal melodies sound a bit weird.

On a second listen, I hear a lot of Rainbow influence on this song.

Stunning artwork. Song is pretty nice as well. Rainbow is not a bad idea. Gates of Babylon is what came to my mind.

Some nice hooks (ooooo parts) but overall a crap song. Guitars are so silent and boring. At least the drums sound better than on Heritage, although they are quite boring too. Overall, I just think they lost their identity altogether with this... Even Heritage is more interesting than this... :(
