Will check out the Opeth album, not sure when but will do!
@Mosh here my take on In Flames:
I only like their older work, which has lots of Maidenish influences (melodic / harmonies). I haven't followed them since the turn of the century, although I still have a live album, recorded in 2000. I liked that one still (
The Tokyo Showdown).
Before In Flames, I don't think there were such melodic bands in the non-clean vocals metal scene. There was At the Gates, who I am sure must have influenced In Flames but they incorporated more let's say, less accessible parts in their music. They also had melodies but their song structures were more unpredictable with music that changed rhythm and/or tempo every 10 seconds. Of course, there's also Amorphis, who released their album
Tales From the Thousand Lakes in the same year as Lunar Strain (1994).
Tales can be seen as a more accessible stuff, because the vocals are less harsh. The grunts (not screams which are imo by definition harder) are deepr and perhaps less disturbing.
Here one song from each of the first four In Flames releases.
I am afraid you might not be into stuff with only harsh vocals, but perhaps the melodies may interest you. Really, the melodic side is very strong in this band, at least back then: every shot was a bulls eye.
From
Lunar Strain (1994)
Love the acceleration @ 2.40! Awesome harmonies.
Since In Flames did not have a vocalist yet, Mikael Stanne of Dark Tranquillity was asked to provide session vocals for this record.
From
Subterranean (1995)
Atmospheric and sweet melodic guitar work.
In Flames still did not have a vocalist yet, so session vocals were provided this time by Henke Forss. This release garnered much attention and led the band to acquire a record deal with Nuclear Blast.
From
The Jester Race (1996)
Hell yeah! This song has some of the coolest riffs and melodies ever recorded in Northern Europe.
Anders Fridén was asked to join the band and he still is their vocalist til this day. Remember that the Dark Tranquility singer was on the In Flames debut album? Well, Anders Fridén was originally the vocalist for Dark Tranquillity! He performed on
their debut album(!),
Skydancer, but left the band soon after.
From
Whoracle (1997)
Outstanding chorus. I wonder how this song will do in the Tournament of Short Songs.
