Olympic Games Rio 2016

I watched a bad landing for a Georgian gymnast. It looked like she landed on the tip of her toes and broke them. All of them.

And YESSSSS another Dutch one, Anna van der Breggen wins the Olympic Gold!!!! In the last 20 meters.... man.

What a Hitchcock scenario.... still no news from Van Vleuten.

edit: that's bad indeed Loosey. :/

edit 2:
Here's that fall. I just heard that she's OK (whatever that means). At least nothing of what I earlier thought.

Van Vleuten has a heavy concussion and three little fractures in her lumbal spine and needs to stay 24 hours at IC.

news:
Historical first medal for Kosovo: gold for Majlinda Kelmendi (judo).

and:
The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) has taken a clear stand:
- - -

Russian athletes have been banned from competing at the Rio 2016 Paralympics following the country's doping scandal.

"The anti-doping system in Russia is broken, corrupted and entirely compromised," said IPC president Sir Philip Craven at a news conference on Sunday.

"The Russian Paralympic Committee are unable to ensure compliance with and enforcement of the IPC anti-doping code and the world anti-doping code within their own national jurisdiction and they can not fulfil its fundamental obligation as an IPC member.

"As a result, the Russian Paralympic Committee is suspended with immediate effect."

"Tragically this situation is not about athletes cheating a system, but about a state-run system that is cheating the athletes. The doping culture that is polluting Russian sport stems from the Russian government.

"The Russian government has catastrophically failed its para-athletes. Their 'medals over morals' mentality disgusts me. The complete corruption of the anti-doping system is contrary to the rules and strikes at the very heart of the spirit of Paralympic sport.

"It shows a blatant disregard for the health and wellbeing of athletes and, quite simply, has no place in Paralympic sport. Their thirst for glory at all costs has severely damaged the integrity and image of all sport, and has certainly resulted in a devastating outcome for the Russian Paralympic Committee and para-athletes."

I have not watched any Olympics yet .. maybe when the baseball game is over today, I will tune into something. I generally like the winter games better and I am not really all that excited about this year between all the Rio stuff and no event/person is grabbing me as "I must watch this" this time around

I feel blessed that I can have a certain level of general sports appreciation so that I am not indifferent about the greatest sports tournament in the world. It's really great to see my countrymen and - women act on this exciting high level. On top of that I enjoy lots of other footage without Dutch sporters as well. These weeks (re)open my eyes for sports that have hardly any coverage outside this tournament. And because I thoroughly enjoy all this, this month doesn't feel as the average "(only bad news in) media"-month.

Basketball:
Croatia have beaten silver medalist Spain!! What a comeback.

Tennis:
Djokovic lost in the first round.

I feel the same way. I love seeing the top athletes in the world competing for the ultimate prize in their respective sports. It's also interesting to get a glimpse at many sports that I normally don't follow outside of the Olympics.

Outside of Tennis and Basketball, I don't even go out of my way for any of the other events in particular. I will just watch whatever happens to be on when I have some free time, and I almost always end up enjoying it.

Did they just pick random people on the street to compete?

-The video is from 2015 btw, not Rio 2016.

I wonder if nerves got the better of them. They obviously have a lot of ability but are just messing it up.

Watched some last night, a bit of ping pong, beach volleyball (which I like, played a bit when I lived in San Diego), and swimming. Phelps is just unreal, if he had gills, he would make a good dolphin.

Michael Phelps is going to be the greatest Olympian of all time, by far. When he started he was still a kid - now he has his kid at his Olympic meets.

Going to be? Isn't he already? He has double the medals the 2nd most decorated Olympian of all time has AND the record for most medals in a single Olympic event.

Or do you mean he won't ever be overtaken?

It would seem hard to overtake him I would think .. you have to be really good, have the desire to compete over several Olympics and stay in top form for over a decade, and a bit of luck in avoiding injury. Especially hard in an individual and physically taxing event like swimming.

Edit ... and on the non-individual side, have good teammates to win the relay events

Yes, this is what I mean.

Maybe in the medal count he won't be, but I think the title of "Greatest Olympian Ever" will always be open for new candidates. Swimmers have certain advantages going for them in the medal count business, they have a lot of disciplines and a lot of medals go around. They also have a longer period of relevancy than athletes of most other sports, you can succeed at a younger age and stay competitive well into your 30s.

If Usain Bolt wins triple gold in these games as well, his success won't be too far off. 3 golds in all short distance dash events (100m, 200m and 4x100m) in 3 consecutive Olympics.

I think nobody but Jesse Owens will ever be the Greatest Olympian Ever. It's not just the medals that make history.
