Speed and warmth are the hallmarks of "The Final Frontier," Iron Maiden's 15th studio album. The British metal sextet recorded at Compass Point Studios in the Bahamas -- returning to the spot where the group had previously recorded between 1983-86.

"We breezed through the album, really," guitarist Dave Murray tells Billboard.com. "We actually finished it in six weeks. We were getting down a track a day -- all playing together as a band, Bruce (Dickinson) singing, all in the same room, so there's a very live-in-the-studio feel to it. Once we finished a track we'd jump straight into doing some extra guitar bits. It was very quick for us."

Murray says the 10-track set, produced by Kevin Shirley, mixes "straight-ahead, uptempo rock songs with good grooves with some other tracks that are kind of longer and more complex." One, the politically-tinged "El Dorado," is currently available for fans to download. Another highlight is the album-closing "When the Wild Wind Blows," an 11-minute track that's one of the longest songs Iron Maiden has ever recorded. "The rhythm's a little bit different from what we've done before, and there's lots of melodies," Murray reports. "It's a big song. We learned it in sections just because it was such a complex arrangement, but it sounds quite natural (on the record)."

"The Final Frontier" is Iron Maiden's first set of new material since 2006's "A Matter of Life and Death," the group's longest gap ever between studio albums. But Murray says that thanks to other projects -- including 2009's platinum-selling, award-winning documentary "Flight 666" -- the group didn't feel the time pass. "There was still a lot of stuff coming out from the band, so it doesn't feel like four years," he says. "I guess time flies when you're having fun."

The Iron Maiden gang is getting its kicks again on the road, atypically touring before a new album's release. The group -- which wraps its North American trek on July 20 and kicks off in Europe 10 days later -- is playing "El Dorado" amongst established favorites such as "The Number of the Beast," "Hallowed Be Thy Name" and "Iron Maiden," but Murray says it's looking forward to bringing more of the new material to the stage in the future.

"It's summer so we just wanted to go out and enjoy ourselves and play a lot of old material are fans are going to know," he explains. "We'll definitely be out again -- We're not sure when, but we'll definitely be playing more songs from the new album. But at the moment it's nice because you're always planning ahead and what you're going to be doing in five years, and sometimes it's nice to just live in the moment."

"Old" being a relative term...

Another resume from a Maiden french forum: "Satellite 15... The Final Frontier : incroyable assaut sonore.

Hope it gets translated asap!!! :edmetal:

Here is what I got out of the above post from Jeff:

Satellite 15 ... The Final Frontier: Incredible sound assault. Dam brutally heavy riffs and atonal, layers of tribal percussion and atmospheric keys to opening Somewhere in Time (I'm not seize anything they wanted to say but he looks happy journalist)
Direct approach of Adrian, a little at a UFO. Title to be a vibrant anthem live.

Ode Mother of Mercy and the supreme Coming Home (the more he seems to have loved,
Powerful riffs and catchy melodies.

Starblind Based on keyboards (oops,) reeling mix of percussion and mastered by Nicko and Bruce great perf.

The Talisman A theatricality in which the group excels

Isle of Avalon incredible tension and one of the most expressive solos heard on a Maiden album

When The Wild Wind blows One of the most brilliant compositions Harris, Celtic melody, with a different approach to the bass of what we used Steve.

"The Final Frontier is undoubtedly the album's strongest group since the return of Bruce and Adrian

A translation:

A brand new album from Iron Maiden is a major event and we always expect the best from this legendary band. But nothing has prepared us to the incredible sonic assault starting this fifteenth album. An onslaught of brutally heavy and atonal riffs, tribal percussions layers and an atmospheric touch à la Somewhere in Time (1986) are heard in the Overture of this ambitious album, which is epic in every way. As opposed to every album since Seventh Son of a Seventh son (1988), the first track is not a single but an eight and a half minute number. Satelite 15.... The Final Frontier, starting with a direct approach from Adrian Smith, really close from a UFO: a very vibrant title destined to become one of your best track live. The tracklist setup is very crucial. The catchy El Dorado, the hymn Mother of Mercy and the supreme Coming Home, temper the listener with their powerful riffs and their great melodies but it is clear from the beginning that The Final Frontier  becomes as adventurous as its title suggests. Based on keyboards, Starblind  mixes arythmic (staggering?) and mastered percussions by Nicko Mcbrain and a great vocal performance by Bruce Dickinson. The Talisman, co-written by Janick Gers, delivers a theatrical atmosphere very appreciated by the fans and in which the band always succeeds. Isle of Avalon meets the Welsh (Celtic?) mythology while the band creates an incredible tension leading to an excellent section from bassist Steve Harris, to one of his most expressive solo we have heard on an Iron Maiden album for a very long time. As strong as the album is, the best is kept for the end with an eleven minutes take entitled Where the Wild Wind Blows. Harris, admitting his style can be predictable, has chosen not to include slow crescendos and galloping explosions; he simplifies his approach, keeping a steady ambiance throughout the entire track. The result: one of the most brilliant composition, with its Celtic melody, the retained speaking of Bruce Dickinson, and the tragic character from Steve Harris that will make the listener travel in the higher spheres.
We are pleased when our favortite bands release good albums after a long carreer, but the way Iron Maiden is reinventing itself is extraordinary. The last four albums were their greatest creative period since their glorious days from the 80’s and The Final Frontier is another peak in their carreer.

Thanks to Jeffmetal's latest link and Suicidehummer's Google translation:
[Judging the outcome of a listening session for journalists, fans of Iron Maiden could be destabilized by listening to the next album from the legendary British metal band.

The Final Frontier, fifteenth album career of Iron Maiden to be released August 17, the sextet will continue his explorations into the path of progressive metal, "says guitarist Adrian Smith, who held talks with Le Journal de Quebec, outside the show that will give the group at the Summer Festival of Quebec on July 9.

Incidentally, this evening, lron Maiden will be preceded on stage by a leading group of progressive metal, Dream Theater.

"Journalists who we did hear were quite shocked, mainly by the first part, Smith is hilarious launches.

"It's difficult, he adds, to express in words why they were surprised, but say that the first piece is very different from what we usually do. I think the rest of the first part is very straightforward, and we chain to something highly progressive. There is therefore a bit of everything on this album, but we certainly an even more progressive. "

The album was recorded at Compass Point Studios, Nassau, which is a homecoming for the band by Bruce Dickinson, because it was there that was recorded discs Piece of Mind, Powerslave and Somewhere In Time, in the 1980s.

"We returned because it is a fabulous place and sunny and we can rest between shots. But it was cold, which is a bit strange. However, re-enter the studio was amazing. Nothing has changed. This is not a studio on the cutting edge of technology, but it still has the same spirit. "

BACK TO NASSAU
From these recording sessions were held ten songs for an album with a duration of seventy-six minutes. The fans have certainly already heard El Dorado, first single posted by the group and will be played in concert throughout the summer tour.

But that is the only completely new song on stage as Iron Maiden prefer not to play songs that the audience does not know.

That will come quickly, however, because the group provides touring again in 2011. Meanwhile, those who make their summer concerts will hear most parts of their last four albums and a few old tubes. Decision assume that musicians completely.

"The fine line between pleasing the fans and be a sort of cabaret group. We love our new music and we play a lot of our material on this recent tour. Of course, we'll do some old songs, but we have a lot in our last tour. I think that is one reason why we love our fans. We follow our own path without being too corporate. We play what we want to play and the better if our fans appreciate, "said Adrian Smith.

LOYAL FANS
Let's say that Iron Maiden fans make their own good, since U.S. and Canadian customers are among the most loyal of the music industry. Smith explains that loyalty by the constant presence of the group on stage.

"We played for the first time in Canada in 1980 and we returned almost every year since then. When we started out mostly, we played around the globe. We bring our music to fans, "said the musician, recalling that Maiden has never relied on radio stations to come forward.

"We played the hard way. Fans remember it and we see as a real band and not as a group only seen on video on MTV. This is surely one of the reasons for their loyalty. "/quote]

I like the new song. It's hard rocker, reminds me of Judas Priest but mostly Black Sabbath's Lady Evil.
Waiting patiently for the full album.  :)

I think it's quite a big deal that it's available in 720p and deserves an announcement.

Re: Official thread for Final Frontier-720p HD of new video on youtube!

I've listened to El Dorado about 5 or 6 times this morning (after a long period of not listening to it at all) and I have to say it really grew on me. I read the lyrics by Jeff and the analysis that connects the lyrics to Poe's poem, brilliant and multi-layered stuff by Bruce.

The best parts of the song are the lines in the bridge where the number of syllables is equal to the number of beats, it's simply great. If I didn't explain myself, I'm talking about these three:

(1st bridge) I'm a trickster smiling underneath this mask of love and death

(2nd bridge) The smoke and mirrors visions that you see are just like me

(3rd bridge) This ship of fools is sinking as the cracks begin to grow

It reminds me of one of Bruce's songs, possibly of the chorus of "The Magician".

Re: Official thread for Final Frontier-Just 10 days to earliest release date!

Are they actually going to release El Dorado as a single (as in a record or CD)?  I hope so, the cover looks like it would be cool, plus it would mean (hopefully) a good B-side cover/song

Re: Official thread for Final Frontier-Just 10 days to earliest release date!

Actually, I'm confused as to what the first single is. El Dorado has cover art and TFF has a music video.

Re: Official thread for Final Frontier-Just 10 days to earliest release date!

Good Point, whatever the single(s) is/are, I hope they release them in physical form (ideally on a record).

Re: Official thread for Final Frontier-The countdown is on! 10 days!

According to multiple posts on the paid board, there will be no physical singles released.

14 days until the North American release.  Can't believe there's only 2 weeks to go.

Re: Official thread for Final Frontier-The countdown is on! 10 days!

The wait is killing me.  Sure, Maiden already has 14 studio albums, and a good handful of compilations and live albums...and then there is the Bruce solo material, but i've listened to all of it 50 times over since March when the album was announced.  I need me some new Maiden!

Re: Official thread for Final Frontier-The countdown is on! 10 days!

I'm doing my run through of all their albums.  One album per day.  I always do this prior to a new Maiden album, it actually helps the time pass and gets me even more pumped for new songs.

The problem for me is, i've done this constantly.  The wait is driving me nuts!

I've been doing it non stop more or less since 1992, I hear you man.

Re: Official thread for Final Frontier-The countdown is on! 10 days!

On the other hand, there will come a day when there will no longer be a new album to wait for...and then i'll truly miss all this anticipation and excitement.  But for now...hurry the hell up 17th!  I wish I could cryo-freeze myself for two weeks.  But I don't have the vacation time at work to spend....or any way of freezing myself.
