I'm not in the camp that "Rey should be a nobody" because;
  1. I think it it's a Chekhov's gun narrative violation on Johnson's part (along with the Knights of Ren, Snoke, and Anakin's lightsaber).
  2. When you're 8 movies into a 9 movie series about the Skywalkers and characters with special significance, it's a little late to be playing with misdirection & expectations.
  3. SW has always been "Greek mythology in space" - the last two trilogies have been based on prophecies and chosen ones
    1. I have no problems mixing up the formula - just save it for a different movie series within the SW universe.

I completely agree though that they should have had the entire trilogy mapped out in advance. How could Disney let the final trilogy (with the beloved original cast) in a franchise this big/iconic be written so haphazardly?

I liked Last Jedi but I agree that it would’ve helped to map it out a bit more. They don’t need to hash out every detail in advance but they should’ve at least had an idea of where it was all going. As much as I’ve enjoyed the last two as individual films, I can acknowledge that wrapping it all up is going to be more challenging than the other two trilogies.

I disagree with the Chekov’s Gun argument. Nothing about those things mentioned were frivolous or unnecessary, save for perhaps The Knights of Ren (but I assume they will be addressed in 9). As far as Rey’s back story in particular, the implication is that the force can manifest itself anywhere in anyone. I personally prefer this to the idea of prophecies and chosen ones. It opens up the possibilities a bit. But I do see the argument that this is a Skywalker story at the end of the day, although we do have Kylo still.

I agree that Rey being non-Skywalker/Kenobi is the proper move. I liked that a lot more.

The Last Jedi was fine, but dumb in places. I don't mean the things that angry internet people generally consider dumb. My complaints are 1) the stupid attempts at Guardians of the Galaxy humour that continuously broke the mood of the story and 2) the inability to come up with anything interesting for Fin/Rose to do.

Sub anger: You have a casino pleasure planet and you don't cameo Lando!?

I agree with those criticisms, although the humor landed with me for the most part despite seeming tonaly out of place.

I rate Last Jedi about on par with Return of the Jedi. Both contain half of an amazing film but the other half is filler for characters with nothing left to do.

I gotta admit the casino sequence reminded me of the worst parts of the Prequel Trilogy.

I think what broke the camel's back for a lot of the raging fans is the fact that that TFA introduced so many mysteries and upcoming plot twists that were resolved not just in an unsatisfactory way, but in one that tells us these mysteries were unimportant. Even I felt a bit cheated with the double blow of Snoke's non-backstory and Rey's non-family background. My guess is that in five or ten years, it will be possible to look at this no longer understanding what the fuss was about and seeing it as possibly even clever plot construction. But for now, with the build-up and hype still fresh in memory, I don't think it was a very smart creative decision.

Here is an awesome fan-remake of Obi-Wan and Vader's duel on the Death Star from A New Hope. Obviously too out-of-place to be inserted into the original film, but it's very well made and choreographed, I really enjoyed it. Made me think that if Episode IX doesn't contain an amazing lightsaber duel I'll be very disappointed.
