Official Hockey discussion thread

All the good players have a mean streak. Hockey is played best with raw emotion. It gives a player a competitive edge. Gordie Howe had a nasty one. I think Chara was'nt completely aware of the dangerzone he was in, but caught up i a moment where he wanted to send a bit of a message to the Habs. The Bruins were down 4-0 in the dying seconds of the 2nd period. It is fucked up that Pacioretty got mangled. I don't think that this is a Bertuzzi or McSorely type of play. Glad that Pac's injuries were'nt as serious as they could have been.

Is it just me, or does this one seem like Habs fans are ready to strap the guy into an iron maiden, while everybody else is like "too bad, but these things happen."

Did you hear about the criminal investigation Montreal opened on Chara? THAT is how fucking fanatical they are. And yeah, everyone else is too bad so sad.

Are you fucking serious? That is crazy.

IIRC, they did the same thing with that Mcsorely (I can never spell that right) hit you were talking about.  It never goes anywhere, but it is always 'news worthy' to report it.

The only one that I know of in which ANYTHING came of it was Bertuzzi's... banned for a year and he also had civil charges... I think.

Matt Cooke is at it again. He elbowed Ryan McDonagh in the middle of the third. I thought the Rangers were going to lose for giving up a shorty on the 5 minute major, but thankfully Niskanen inadvertendly wacked Callahan in the face and gave them a 5 on 3 powerplay that they converted on! Thanks Cooke for helping the Rangers. Cook is also going to be the first repeat offender to face the new league head injury protocol. I bet Colin Campbell is going to give him 8 games. Glad King Henrick was ok from the Montreal game. He said Torts challenged him to play against the Pens and I think it showed in the way he played that second period.

Granted Cooke is a dirty player, but one of the things that absolutely pisses me off about the new rules is that what used to be a simple elbowing penalty is now practically forbidden... the pussifying of hockey... blatant... pussifying of hockey.

I agree with suspending players for elbowing heads is pussyfing the game, but we have to look at the elbow pads they use today, consisting of a very hard outer shell. They are not the same they used 20 years ago when they usde to be made of TuffStuff, which is a hardened foam. It still hurt like an SOB but it would'nt cause the injuries that today's pads can. The Cooke elbow was away from the play too, in the neutral zone. It was'nt like he was battling in the corner or around the net. He was just taking a cheap shot.

I don't think it's "pussifying" the game at all to punish a guy who deliberately goes at a guy's head with his elbow.  This wasn't incidental contact.  What with Cooke's history, 8+ games would be appropriate.

Sorry, I think that a flying elbow to the head should be illegal. It ends careers. One only needs to look at the studies done on Probert's brain to realize hockey is hurting its players. Crosby's been out for how long?

Cooke has to get 10.

Tough hockey isn't about elbows to the head.
Cooke and his cowardly, cheap shot act is the pussification of hockey.
Ten games.

Agreed about Cooke, but there was another "incident" like a week ago where the check was part of the play, you can tell the player is just finishing his check, elbow rises a bit, CLIPS the other players head and BAM, 5 minute major... WTF? I wish I remembered what game that was, but it wasn't that long ago.

@LC: Bad plays happen. Yes Crosby has been out for months and Lindros was forced to retire. Probert was an agitator so of course he saw a lot of rough play. Neely's career ended due to a knee on knee hit by a VERY dirty Samuelson (also a pen like Cooke)... Injuries are going to happen on a contact sport, but now EVERY single hit to the head, whether elbow, glass and some pundits even include fights on this, are analyzed to death and condemned.... too much.

Every hit to the head is not analyzed and condemned, and certainly not punished. The NHL agrees with you, Onhell. They are not banning head shots. Just dangerous ones, like the Matt Cooke Flying Elbow Special.

Yeah, the Cooke elbow was away from the play, just like the Dany Heatly one on Ott. I could see if they were battling in the corner or behind the net, but this one was bit unnecessary. I think he is gonna sit at least 8 games.

He has an in-person meeting with Colin Campbell. There's NEVER in-person meetings. He's going to get at least 10. I wouldn't be surprised if he gets the season.

In person? No shit. Yeah I think he is in some deep shit. They are going to make an example out of him for being the first repeat offender to take a headshot after Commisioner Dildo....I mean Bettman's 5 point plan to deal with concusions.

Cooke gets 10 games (rest of the regular season) plus the 1st round of the playoffs. Big suspension on a greasy player. If he does it again, he might be looking at more than 20 games.

Apparently Mario Lemieux talked to him last night after he was ejected, and basically told him to smarten up or his days as a Pittsburgh Penguin are over.

LOL, that makes it sound like a Saturday morning cartoon... The NHL is still trying to make sense of the rise in concussions since the work stoppage. I only watch NHL overtime on VS, so I don't know the other opinions out there. I only get JR, Mike Milbury, Billy Jaffe and ocassionally Ken Danyko. There is some other douche in there that wants to ban fighting all together, but the general consensus on the network is that extreme hits like that from Cooke should be dealt with, but that fighting and accidental headshots shouldn't be dealt with with the same severity.
