NOW WATCHING

I think it was the first series we watched - I think it was about 6 episodes we sat through.

The third series has just finished being shown on telly. If you enjoyed the first series it's definitely worth watching the rest.

I really enjoyed Zoolander. When Billy Zane said "it's a walk off" I nearly fucking died laughing. Also Ferrell's delivery of "I feel like I'm on crazy pills" was priceless. A lot of fun moments in that movie.

Yeah, priceless! It's an hymn to the bullshitness this film, really love it! Meanwhile, the walk off scene has become a cult.

Some links:
Lego walk off
USNA Zoolander Walk-Off
walk off with once the original movie dialogues (audio track removed by Sony)
Walk off with slightly changed dialogues
Again another one with removed audio track
RBCC walk off

...And there are more, dude!  :D

Zoolander's 4 principal looks; Le Tigre's a lot softer, it's a little more of a... catalog look, I use it for footwear sometimes.

I saw Polansky's Ghost Writer.

A suspenseful Hitchockian thriller. We follow a ghost writer, the anonymous writer of the ex-UK Prime Minister's memoirs. But he gets into a dangerous spot when he finds out about his predecessor's discoveries.

The film won't be popular in the US because -apart from the maker itself- there's direct criticism on the US and it shows a bad side of the country, but as a film, and story and the way it is shot, it's a thrill from start to finish.

Brilliant!! Thanks Foro!!
Yeah, Hitchcock's influence is dominating, good to see an old school thriller in 2010, though. :)
On a side note, Polanski was arrested in Switzerland just before post production, probably a pure coincidence, but still interesting to be mentioned.

Great you liked it!

Ehhh, that was a thousand_suns post mate. Don't you remember the big discussion we were having on this forum?
You and me were there too even. :)

The Social Network. That was perfect. That dark, pounding score matches the atmosphere of the film in the best way. The dialogue was sharp and relentless in classic Aaron Sorkin style. The three main actors were impeccable although I'm not quite convinced that JT deserves an Oscar nod relative to the other two. I actually enjoyed Andrew Garfield's performance a bit more. A really tight film overall. The type that just flies by and you don't notice it since you're constantly glued to the screen and taking in everything that's happening and that's being said. I can't find the slightest fault. Everything seemed to work excellently.

(oh and I loved how my wife told me that she liked this film more than the lead actor's other film, Juno)

The Social Network is movie of the year for me. Absolute quality.

Try seeing it in a "different state of mind"

Makes it pretty enjoyable.

Hold on a minute mate. I'm a HUGE James Cameron fan. I fucking RAN into the theatre to see that flick. He's made some of the greatest movies I've ever seen. My state of mind was this "okay Mr. Cameron, blow my mind again please" I suppose he succeeded. I walked out stunned at how much I didn't care about anyone in the movie and completely shocked at the lack of effort in the story. Don't get me started on those fucking 3D glasses either.

Inception and The Social Network are definitely my Top 2 films of the year. I just can't decide right now which is better. Repeat viewings shall decide that for me :)

Another UK comedy I've been watching of late is Whites starring Alan Davies. It revolves around a supposedly high quality kitchen in a large hotel. Roland White (Alan Davies) is the head chef who has become this celebrity-chef-wannabe (cooking is the new rock 'n' roll) but is just another run-of-the-mill chef who may never actually get a Michelin star. His sous-chef, Bib, is really passionate and caring about what he does but is constantly left to run the kitchen while White kicks back and thinks about his next book (or whatever), leaving Bib perpetually on the verge of a breakdown. What Bib needs is help, he really doesn't need an apprentice sous-chef undermining him, but that is exactly what he gets - Skoose.

It is a really funny show mainly because the cast is so good and the characters are just brilliant. Although I can imagine it not to be everyone's cup-of-tea.

Avatar is one of the most annoying movies I've ever seen. Just a horrid movie with no likable characters, a terrible story line and no originality whatsoever. FUCK 3D! "I see you" indeed. Utter tripe
Agreed 100%.

Avatar isn't that bad. It just gets too much praise for what it is... and what it is is an impressive technical innovation showcased via a mediocre story. It's alright, but hardly as good as a lot of people make it out to be.

I saw *again* Taxi Driver. I never understood the greatness of this movie, nor the greatness of the 'are you talking to me' scene.

Part of the reason is that De Niro COMPLETELY improvised it... shows his chops as an actor and elevated the character to iconic status.

Have fun with The Hobbit then.

Thanks. They'll release it in 2D also ;)

While we're talking about 3D: Saw 3D. It's hard to be upset with a franchise that I've (mostly) enjoyed immensely. Saw's moral compass may have become less prevalent with each installment but it generally entertained and disgusted in equal measure. This one is pretty much what I expected but the pointless 3D annoyed m. It added nothing but distraction. And the ending was ruined VERY early on in the flick. That said, I still laughed a lot and pointed at the screen in disgust a lot so, like I said, hard to be upset 5/10. I'm taking a point away because of 3D.
