NOW WATCHING

Ha, what do you know? and I didn't even read it, just from the jist of it it sounded very "Indiana Jones" to me.

Anyway, the last film I saw was Glory Road, the "true" story of How Texas Western College beat Kentucky in the NCAA championship back in 1965 (or was it 66? ah whatever). This movie was very emotional for me because my mother attended Western College when that happened and she is an avid basketball fan. She went to all their games and knew the players (she told me David Latin asked her out on a date but she was too embarrased and shy to say yes) and she has told the story to my brother and myself over and over and over and over again. So I liked the film because in a way it vindicated my mother because I just thought she was crazy and who cared about a basketball game. Now I see the magnitude of the event and my mom went bonkers when she found out about the film. they premiered it at UTEP (University of Texas at El Paso), what Texas Western became after winning the championship. Many articles have been written on the subject, some discrediting the film saying other teams had four starting black players well before Texas Western as if dismising the fact that Five IS NOT four and that the two reserve players were black as well, a FIRST in NCAA history. Others more fair and balances like the SI (Sports Illustrated) article pointing out the dramatizations of the film (Haskins won the championship in his fifth, not first, season at TW) but acknowledging the importance of starting and playing only black players. Really good movie and to say "my mom was there, saw it happen," is pretty cool [!--emo&:D--][img src=\'style_emoticons/[#EMO_DIR#]/biggrin.gif\' border=\'0\' style=\'vertical-align:middle\' alt=\'biggrin.gif\' /][!--endemo--]

Munich. After some discussion and reading on Spielberg's ideas, I am sure I know what the film wants to tell me... but I am absolutely sick and tired of seeing overly violent and graphic films. There's no reason for it. I am sick of seeing in every detail how people get machine-gunned or have any kind of bolt getting rammed through people's heads or any of that. I don't need to see guts hanging out of steaming bodies. Stop it already! There are films which made the same point without such totally pointless violence orgies.

In the book, Langdon is actually described as looking like Harrison Ford.
(But I suspect Dan Brown threw that in with an eye to the movie rights.)

Ha! I guess that detail just entered my subconcious. I do find it annoying when a character is portrayed like nothing I imagined he'd look like in the book. Can't think of an example right now though.

I got one, Dustin Hoffman, Sharon Stone and Samuel L. Jackson as Norman, Beth and Harry from Sphere, hell that entire movie was hidious.

I saw a few weeks ago the film Downfall (or Der Untergang). Feel free to disagree with me, but I thought this was the first war film I'd ever seen that didn't glorify war one little bit. I felt the film was absolutely fantastic, dealing with a subject that was very difficult to deal with both realistically and passionately, but I found myself crying at the pathetic (meant in the proper sense) nature of the film. Watching a scene such as Goebbel's wife giving her children suicide pills, one by one, is incredibly moving.

I urge you all to watch this film.

Try Das Boot or Stalingrad, to name just those two...

I saw Phone Booth yesterday. It's a great thriller. Absolutely amazing how from a cocky SOB Colin Farrel's character is reduced to a pile of rubish in the end... Great play by Farrek, great script, great everything... You can feel the tension growing

Just finished watching "Night Of The Living Dead" (1968) again. Definitely one of my favourite horror movies of all time. It's amazing what George A. Romero was able to achieve with this low-bugdet production... not even all actors are professional actors, but the performances are very good. If you are a fan of horror films I highly recommend watching this film... it is public domain, so you can download it legally:

'Nosferatu' (1922) can also be downloaded legally there:

This thread hasn't been getting a lot of attention recently for some reason :: I'll start the ball rolling again.

An Irish TV company is having it's "Clint Eastwood: Do ya feel lucky punk?" season and is showing some great films. Last night (Saturday 18th February) "The Unforgiven" was shown. I think it was a great movie. Starring and directed by Clint Eastwood, featuring Gene Hackman and Morgan Freeman.

The movie is basically an ironic look at the typical cowboy movies Eastwood made. It is the opposite of the gloryifying features of his previous movies. After years as an assasin, Eastwood reitres from the business to raise a family. Before long, he is called back into action because he needs the money. Working with his old partner and a young immature kid, he tracks down two cowboys who have been very naughty [img src=\"style_emoticons/[#EMO_DIR#]/tongue.gif\" style=\"vertical-align:middle\" emoid=\":P\" border=\"0\" alt=\"tongue.gif\" /]

After killing the men, we get the bitter aftertaste of what all the killing has done to Clint. He is a shell of the man he once was and years of merciless killing has left him broken. This movie is a far cry from "the good, the bad and the ugly", "For a few dollars more" etc... it shows how society has destroyed the human spirit. The film is a metaphor for how we all live our lives hard and quick, then live to regret it...

"Don't waste your time always searching for those wasted years"
10/10... thoroughly recommended [img src=\"style_emoticons/[#EMO_DIR#]/cool.gif\" style=\"vertical-align:middle\" emoid=\"B)\" border=\"0\" alt=\"cool.gif\" /]

I absolutely love Clint Eastwood's films, especially 'For A Few Dollars More' and the first three 'Dirty Harry' films.

Anyway, I watched 'A Clockwork Orange' today, and thought it was fantastic. I've heard that it's been criticised for glorifying violence but I don't think it does, but is a wonderfully chilling and thought-provoking film. I'd be interested to hear what others have to say about this film, and whether they liked it or not.

I've seen Clockwork Orange years ago, but read the book last year. It should be manditory reading in school.

Movies
Yes, see "Downfall", rent the DVD and watch the interviews with writers , directors and the actor who played Hitler.

The Constant Gardener, story by LaCarre.

Made for TV version of Doctor Zivago, long but good.

"They" (or something like that). Pretty mediocre horror film, but it would have left some sort of impression if they had used the alternate ending.

"Garden State". Nice film, but very, very bizarre. I have no idea what it is trying to tell me. Maybe more suitable for a date or something.

No, I don't mean "The Others". That is a good film. "They" is about a bunch of youths who believe the monsters that dwelled under their beds when they were kids are returning.

I saw that film, it had Robert Deniro in it... "Hide and seek" is the name.
There were four alternate endings in it from memory. It is quite a good film but i disliked the ambiguity and "darkness". Literal darkness caused by a bad lighting technician, not a schizophrenic child [img src=\"style_emoticons/[#EMO_DIR#]/tongue.gif\" style=\"vertical-align:middle\" emoid=\":P\" border=\"0\" alt=\"tongue.gif\" /]
