I liked this album a lot the first time I heard it, but my respect for it has only deepened with each listen. The songwriting and performances are outstanding, and there’s a good amount of variety to the songs while staying in the pocket of dark, epic power metal. It’s very cohesive as a concept album, with lyrical and musical callbacks where appropriate, and it really recaptures the best elements of late 90s power metal without all of the major key baggage and overuse of double bass drumming.
It’s all killer and no filler, and I feel very comfortable calling it a modern classic. I’ll need some more distance from it before I can give it a fair review, though.
