but there's a middle ground between too much repetition and turning the chorus into a 2 line thing.
Yes, but such choruses are aslo needed for some songs. Repetition too, in a songs like ''The Parchment'' or ''Empire Of The Clouds'' - it's important for the mood and the picture the lyrics are trying to describe.
The verses in Rime and the chorus in Seventh Son are what get me. That's also what I alluded to when I wrote The Parchment and Seventh Son are stylistically different, repetition works much better in atmospheric music to me than in energetic parts (verses/chorus).
For me the verses in Rime are perfect, while the chorus in Seventh Son is well balanced with the ''oh-oh'' parts (and there's not that much singing in the song). The repetition alwyas work better in atmosphere music (instrumental sections) than in verses/chorus.
The title track is another one people have problems with, but I think it's fine. There's enough going on within the chorus. Don't really like the chorus of The Wicker Man for the same reason, it's great live but sounds kinda dead on the album.
''There's enough going on within the chorus'' - I agree. Everything is perfect in ''The Wicker Man'' imo. Btw, do you like the chorus more with the additional verses from the Radio version?
Really?! That's pretty ridiculous, none of their epics are fast paced, the closest one is maybe Phantom... Btw, by pace I'm talking about song structure and not tempo, not sure I was being clear about it...
Not only in the epics, I forgot to mention. Song structure? I think the structure of Steve's songs is always great and interesting.

Really good discussion. :ok:

Agreed, well more for Empire as you might have guessed . That middle instrumental part is damn long, but the song conveys clearly that this is the airship flying, and it would just feel wrong if it was shorter.

I probably prefer the radio version, but I rarely listen to the song outside of the album so I usually just hear the album version. Hard to say...

You didn't forget it, I just nitpicked because it's even more surprising regarding the epics... Their epics are almost always drawn out. At least they have scorchers like BQOBD and Man on the Edge in the short songs department. A lot of power metal is influenced by Maiden, but Maiden themselves have a sound that's very much not about jumping around between parts.

First time hearing this. Like it just not his guitar work for it almost always sounds the same on every recording I've heard of his.
