Norwegian terror attacks

It must be said, though, that there have been those who have fallen for the temptation to score political cheap shots in the wake of this tragedy.

  • Some have claimed that with a more liberal firearms law, the shooter would have been stopped.
  • Some obviously want more police and more surveillance
  • Some want to use this tragedy to muffle the whole immigration debate, and link the terrorist to established parties who favor a stricter immigration policy
  • There are also those who seem to agree with the terrorist in opinion, although not in means

But, as the writer of that article says, there has not been much of it. I've come across it on the web forum belonging to the big newspaper VG - I don't contribute there but I read it frequently, and there is really a lot of lowlife idiots on there. Both left and right.

The last few days have really been an exam for our society. I must say some individuals have failed, but as a society I think we are passing. The established political community, including the parties on the right, have handled this in a very decent manner, and the parties on the left have not fallen for the temptation to generalize the whole right half of our political specter.

Unfortunately I couldn't open the link (lots of messages and it crashed) but I think the exam still continues, the coming days, weeks, months, years.

Of course it does. And possibly everything would look different if this had, as initially suspected, been related to Islamist extremism rather than a nationalist. We will hopefully never know. However, I think some of those whose knee-jerk reaction was to spew bile against Muslims in general, are now quite ashamed of themselves.

A small piece of good news: The death toll is probably lower than first thought. The police now operate with 68 dead at Utøya and 8 in Oslo (hoping that all those who are still in hospital, will survive).

It is also decided that the terrorist will stay in custody, with no access to letters and newspapers and with only his lawyer being allowed to visit him (the strictest custody conditions in Norway when one is charged with a crime).

An article summarizing things here, from CNN:

The world would be better off with Beck and his ilk (on the left and the right) off of TV and radio.  They are attention whores that care more about getting their name out there than making any sense whatsoever and in the process degrade whatever cause/political movement they claim to support.  But, they have a right to do it and hopefully most people will just see it for what it is.

I was on vacation when this happened in Oslo and an just catching up on the news, a very horrible event to be sure.

Varg Vikerness' opinion about this (I haven't read it yet, btw.): http://www.burzum.org/eng/library/war_in_europe01.shtml

I read one and a half paragraph of it before I got sick. This man is just as extreme as Breivik. Whereas Breivik blamed all Europe's mischief on Muslims, Vikernes basically starts saying he is right - except it's the Jews that are to blame. They are basically two pieces cut from the same tree, but painted in different colours. They both make me sick.

The only difference is that Vikernes is only a murderer and arsonist, not a mass-murderer.

I'll spare you some reactions by a few anonymous Dutch extreme right wing people, posted on some fora
(quoted in an article I read in a paper today). Dumber than dumb, sicker than sick.

In my country the terrible events in Norway have refuelled the debate between right and left.

The side I agree with (guess which):
Wilders has used much of the same language (and war rethoric) as Breivik and now he and most other anti-Islam loudmouths in the world shout in choir "we have nothing in common with this sick guy, we have nothing to do with his ideas, and his terrible actions".

He ducks for the critical questions which have risen. But he should think about how his words can influence people. He needs to watch his tone, instead of spilling the same hate as this massmurderer, while denying his ideas in the process.

Fox News is going out of its way to argue that Anders Behring Breivik who was behind the bombing and shooting spree in Oslo is not a right-winger or Christian terrorist.

The idiots FUCK News bring on, on their lousy Tea Party sponsored show, seriously think ideology has nothing to do with it. "Could have been anything!"

Man, the thought that millions of people watch and believe this shit, really pisses me off.

The only point I can give those idiots is that any ideology can spawn terrorism if it is drawn to the extreme. But to say that this guy is not ideologically motivated? Nonsense. Like a lot of what FOX News bring out.

I hope that those who are just aware of the challenges related to immigration, and who do not want to fuel hatred, think well through how they speak about these issues. The terrorist should not be allowed to extinguish the debate, but this terrible deed should make us all think about how we discuss these issues.

Being in favor of restricting immigration and being in favor of blowing people up are two different things ... there are many people in various countries that want stricter controls and a small percentage of those that blow people up .. as there are a few wacko Muslims that blow things up .. in both cases it is not correct to attribute the actions of a few radicals to a ;larger universe of people.
