I actually think that when I listen to the frantic almost thrash drum pattern of man on the edge with some of the riffs. I still wouldn't call it thrash but it's close.

This has everything an opener should have and then some.

It would work as an opener, Rainmaker even more so, but Wildest Dreams was written to be an opener in mind, that's its purpose. Like Different World. Ofc it's better live. Montsegur is like The Fallen Angel, not that short anthemic rocker that it's good to follow a longer song.

The riff is pure thrash metal.

The chorus is just too happy and that guitar melody with Bruce singing over it just sounds annoying

I think because the song is very melodic, all those features fit. Like in power metal. Or in Age Of Innocence. Janick and his classic sounding songs, more riff-y, melodic sections, middle length, faster and with high vocals.
