Metallica

Question. Where are these clips from? Are they bonus scenes from Some Kind of Monster or is there another full St. Anger documentary?

Man, I love Metallica's BTS stuff. I dislike Death Magnetic but I enjoyed its making of so much. I could watch hours of studio footage...

Not sure where the videos are from, bonus scenes from Monster might be right. I'm just glad that Metallica are in a different headspace nowadays. Watching those videos you can just tell how much tension that lurks between them. Basically every second sentence sounds like a power struggle :D

Full Making of Load/Reload documentary (There's not THAT much studio footage, also a lot of random goofing around) Released as a fan club DVD. Interesting to see because it wasn't that long after the Black album and the Wherever I may Roam tours...They're still very much like the people they were in the "A Year and a Half in the Life of Metallica" VHS when they were in the studio for the Black album.

That "Year and a Half in the Life" was one of the most interesting and inspiring things I ever watched a young metalhead.

Kirk does have arthritis to blame though. It's probably the biggest single contributor to his deteriorating ability to play his solos, actually. It's pretty obvious too since you can see him struggling to simply move his fingers fast and accurately enough to do his solos.

That said having high action on his guitar and a really awful lead tone make him sound even worse. That and the fact that he seems to play his guitar ridiculously hard, he manages to keep getting them out of tune live pretty consistently.

e: But yeah, he does have a tendency to seemingly forget the occasional solo and improvise (poorly) instead. He also uses the wah to hide some of his sloppiness in a fair few solos.
Time for more slow solos with feel as in Confusion.

Roger that. I feel the same way. Owning the two VHS tapes, part 1 and part 2 of "Year and a Half in the Life" was the bee's knees back in the day. The only thing better was owning the "Live Shit, Binge and Purge" box - which I sadly never did :(:p

There was also another box back then, with all their vinyl EP releases. Remember that one?

But I rememebr the ONE VHS....with just the One video on it...in an unedited and an edited version and I believe some interviews too...Bit of a rip off for a VHS that they didn't included more. It was called "2 For One if I remember right.

So....let's day dream for a second and pretend that Metallica went into hiatus in 1994 after the final leg of the Black album tour . The Loads/St Anger/Death Magnetic never happened...the Napster debacle didn't happen, nor did Lulu or Some Kind of Monster. They simply laid low ("Tool" style) for 20+ years and enjoyed their millions.

Then Metallica came out of hiatus with Hardwired.

Do you think that Metallica would be held in higher esteem? Would they be back at "Black Sabbath" status in terms of respect/reverence?

I think the Load/St. Anger era lowered people's appreciation for their two latest solid albums. If these two albums came out after Load/Reload, it may be different, but the band had nearly 15 years of what many perceived as mediocrity between quality.

Personally, I liked much of Load and Reload, although by trimming the fat the best material could have fit onto an 80-minute disc.

No, because Load and ReLoad are good albums and Black Sabbath never went away, they just changed singers every other month.

I mentioned his arthritis in my earlier post.

Curious, has he talked about this? All I can find is fans speculating. Seems like it would be a pretty big deal otherwise.
