It was twenty years ago today, Sgt. Metal brought the band to play, we've been going in and out of style, but we're guaranteed for refund isle, so let me introduce to you, the one and only broken snare, Sgt. Metal Lonely Angry Baaaaaaand.

Wait...The start of that song was taped rather than live? What has happened to this band?

To be honest, I'll never forgive them for this perfomance:

They clearly don't practice these songs as much as they should, but hey, I'll give 'em credit for at least trying to pull these songs out and play them for the die hard fans. They've always been an imperfect live band and that's part of their charm.

EDIT: Also Lars sucks.

Nothing. The riff in the beginning of the song features an E-bow, which is hard to utilize on stage. For that same reason, they also play beginning to Damage Inc. from tape. Not a rare sight.

Only just played that video... dude should retire and stay behind the scenes as manager or something. Never gonna happen but still.

Angela Gossow of Arch Enemy retired from the band because of the physical toll on her after every show (had to take oxygen between each song). Stayed behind to manage the band, got replaced by another singer. Lars should really do the same.

Lars sucks.

To say Lars sucks is a bit much I think because back in the day the guy was really damn good. The And Justice for All album is a masterpiece of complicated drum-work. Yes he could also do very plodding, meat and potatoes stuff at times but Lars the reason for that is he always knew what would benefit the song. That's why he helped songwriting so much as well. I don't care what any one says about the guy, he was talented and helped the band enormously. That said the guy is appalling these days. Couldn't agree more on that part.

To me, "virtuoso" relates to technique, speed, etc: the physical aspects of playing. Odd time signatures are almost entirely mental. It's a different thing, to me as a musician. All the virtuoso technique in the world won't help you play in 7/8 if you can't count to seven properly...

Of course not, but I find his ability to play what he wrote at least a competent try on that album. These days he can't recreate it, but "Dyers Eve" and "Frayed Ends of Sanity" are the absolute peak of his playing. That album is when he was pushed to his absolute limits as a drummer and he hasn't been that strong since.
