Best song from that album is I Am In Command. The rest of the album is pretty good and if you listen carefully you can hear the odd bit of Maiden (03:18 into Fun Palace is almost a clone of Revelations) - but then again, Mr Waters has never hidden his appreciation of them.

Mostly that indicates that the rest of the album is not that strong (purely a theory of mine, I don't know the album).

It's a great album, but Phantasmagoria stands out.

Do you happen to know if they ever covered Maiden? I think that should sound fucking brilliant.

Not sure if they have, but I would agree it would most certainly be worth listening to.

@Foro: It is a good album, but I must admit I do prefer their debut (Alice in Hell) to this - but don't let that put you off.

I haven't listened to a single full album yet but I surely enjoyed their concert, when they opened for Iced Earth (with Ripper)!

I must check these out indeed. Never Neverland (or something) is also a classic right?

That's the one I was talking about.  From that album also check out Road to Ruin and Stonewall as well as the aforementioned Phantasmagoria and I Am in Command (which is really good, thanks for pointing that out Albie).  I've only listened to the album once since my friend gave me a copy (well, MP3s) last week.

My problem nowadays is that there's so much good thrash metal to get into and I'm still only dipping my toes in.  The only thrash metal bands I'm relatively well acquainted with are the big ones: Metallica, Megadeth and Slayer.  I've been trying out Kreator, Sepultura, Testament, and Annihilator recently and it's a lot to digest.

Foro:
Annihilator's classic album certainly is Alice In Hell. It's basically a 37-minute mother of a riff-fest, and one of the (if not THE) greatest thrash metal albums ever. Never, Neverland is, as I said, a brilliant album too. How can you not like an album that has a song about macaroni and cheese? :D
After that, King Of The Kill is another must-have, but other than that, it's always a bit of a hit-and-miss with them. Waters is basically a miniature Schaffer, and in contrary to Iced Earth, Annihilator really suffered from all those lineup changes they've had.

Invader:
In addition to those you mentioned, I would heartily recommend Anthrax (one of the "Big Four" along with Metallica, Megadeth and Slayer), Sodom, Exodus, Overkill, Flotsam And Jetsam, Holy Moses, Possessed and, above all, Exciter (they are not as "thrashy" as the others, but they pretty much founded the genre). Once you're somehow acquainted with those, you should have a good basic thrash gear. At least get Among The Living (Anthrax), Bonded By Blood (Exodus) and Heavy Metal Maniac (Exciter) as soon as you can- they're essentials, no matter what their availability says (in fact, the Exciter album is impossible to find in stores, so I guess downloading it isn't a sin). Oh, and if you've licked Bay Area blood, go for Heathen (you can legally download their albums on their website for free) and Death Angel next. Finally, perhaps Destruction should be mentioned as the third big German thrash band (after Kreator and Sodom), but I personally have no use for them.

Wow, Perun, thanks for the leads there.  I've been looking for something like that myself.  Looks like a good list to get into.  Anthrax, I've already gotten in my itunes, the rest, I'll have to add!

I must say that I tried a lot of trash but even the best bands have featured vocalists I couldn't stand much. I definitely prefer grunts or black metal kind of screams over most of those dudes' strangled hippo-vocals, who dominantly "trash" the rest of the music. A lot of the bands with those annoying vocals are on Perun's list.

There's a few I haven't checked out yet. E.g., I'm still curious about the legendary Possessed (their guitar player Larry Lalonde later went to Primus!) and some old Exciter and the before mentioned old Annihilator. The current Annihilator singer (at least the one from the live gig I saw) was good as well. Perhaps I should give a chance to some Anthrax as well. I remember that John Bush wasn't a bad singer.

The above stated opinion is purely personal, I realize that some of those bands were highly successful. Often they could be found in main articles and on front covers of most metal magazines.

Hope you enjoy- and I know you will :)

Well, it's a matter of taste, of course. But I'll make that obligatory statement- I had problems with the vocals too at first, but blah blah, you know what I mean ;)

You should certainly check out Seven Churches by Possessed, the album that coined the term "Death Metal". Exciter released two brilliant albums, Heavy Metal Maniac and Violence And Force before they descended into self-parody (I! Hate! I hate school rules! Hate school rules!- jeez...). And with Anthrax it's as always, the "old" Anthrax (Fistful Of Metal -best album cover ever-, Spreading The Disease, Among The Living, State Of Euphoria and perhaps Persistence Of Time) are essential, as for the rest, consume at your own risk.

One song that I play every once in a while is I Am The Resurrection by The Stone Roses. And every time I listen to it, it becomes my favourite song (it has easily one of the best instrumental pieces of any song that isn't The Nomad).

Judge for yourselves.

As did I.

Astronomy, by Blue Öyster Cult: the instrumental section is just wonderful, especially on live versions (I love one in particular, that I heard some years ago on a local radio; I never found it on any of the official live releases :( )

It always seems to me that people who aren't into thrash metal always call it trash metal.  You're no exception. ;)

I can see where you're coming from, though.

That mistake wasn't on purpose! ;)

@Abandon: that live version is on the official release Some Enchanted Evening On that website I see that there is a 2007 re-release of it.

It's by far my favourite BOC-song. Brilliant!

Mark Knopfler - Silvertown Blues

Such a great song,  I like the atmosphere in the song and Knopfler is probably one of the best guitar player of all time! :)

I'm really digging Judas Priest's Nostradamus album now.  It seems every time I listen to it I find something new.  Even today I noticed a nice acoustic guitar in the background of Revelations, for example.  And Future of Mankind seems to grow on me in particular every time I hear it; it has some great solos.  And the riffs in Persecution and Nostradamus are awesome, shame they didn't play those live.
