London 2012 Olympics

I was hoping they would include Maiden, as a part of their musical history, but frankly, there was not much chance of doing it. The Olympic games have always been aimed at the large public and are highly commercialised. Nothing that links to Maiden, really.

Maybe it was just me, but I liked this ceremony better than the one in 2008. Perhaps the fact that I find British culture closer to me than Chinese culture made it easier to relate to what I saw last night.

According to the BBC commentators the British riders were in exactly the position they wanted to be until the final hour of the race. The rest of the peloton were only there to make up the numbers and weren't interested in competing for medals so they let the Brits do all the work thus leaving them with nothing left in the closing stages.

OK, I thought the opening ceremony was blinding - though I'm not so sure about the NHS bit, which felt a bit of an odd thing to parade (GOSH, yes - it worked). Yes there was no metal, but there was Pistols to Prodigy (and Led Zep) so not all bad. As well as Floyd.

And as for the mistake with the North Korean flag - well, it was a complete and utter embarrassment, I'll admit it. But please remember, the entire world outside of the UK seems to have a problem knowing what the English flag actually looks like.

"The crosses of St. George are flying all around me ..." :p Speaking of union flags. I think the British one is a more successful one (in terms of appearance) than the union flags used by Norway and Sweden during the 1814-1905 union: They consisted of the respective flags of the two countries, with this one in the top left corner:

Gold with women cycling! Well deserved!

Indeed. Great win for Marianne Vos. I think you guys are disappointed with the second place from the Women's 4x100 M Freestyle team at swimming. Ranomi Kromovidjojo was amazing as usual but the other ones were huge disappointments. Props to Australian team, though.

Brazil vs. Turkey women's volleyball match was amazing yesterday, we gave the last Olympic champions a hard time in our first Olympic game in that sport. As usual for us (in every sport), we made a huge comeback to get the fourth set and send the match to tiebreak set. Could've won the game with a help of experience, though I'm looking forward to the other games, we have a great team.

United States' basketball team is incredibly dominate, there's no way they're getting a medal other than gold. France has a great team but US dominated easily.

Cycling Road Race was boring, congrats to Vino though, great win.

Even though my country had a disappointing start to the games in most sports, it's going great in terms of fun so far.

Watching Cycling, Gymnastics, Weightlifting, Table Tennis and now Football.

I think i just watched the best perfomance so far, Chinshanlo of Kazakhstan, gold medal in the category of 53kg in weightlifting, with a world record at the Clean and Jerk and the Olympic Record in the final result. And she's only 19... unbelievable.

Yeah, wish it were gold but in the end this is not the most terrible result. Now let's hope everyone gets focused again on the next races.

Teenage girls seem to be amazing at swimming and gymnastics.

I've actually been getting into the basketball by the way. I would never watch an NBA match but I've found that I can watch a match if the UK are competing.

European basketball is far more competitive than NBA. But NBA has the greatest talents, greatest shows, athleticism and flashiness. You may screw the regular season in the NBA, it's more about stats for most of the watchers. But Playoffs are amazing, especially after the first round.

By the way since the basketball topic on the forum is not active, even though that's an Olympics thread, I'd like to congratulate the U16 Turkish basketball team for their gold medal in European Championships. Those guys are same age or younger than me, it's amazing to see that kind of a thing. :D

watched synchronized diving last night for the first time. wow. such precision. enjoyed it. waiting until tonight to watch the men's relay, i think.

So, Phelps is not the same, is he? But he keeps winning medals... He lost the 200m Butterfly by a finger.

The diving last night was fun, I was surprised that the Mexican team was so good, they are not normally associated with diving. I thought the quality was much better than the women's event the night before.

I wish London were a bit warmer so the women's beach Volleyball teams would wear their normal uniforms :) The main US team with Misty May and Kerri Walsh are just incredibly good, to not lose even a set in their Olympic history is pretty impressive, though the Czech team certainly made it close.
