I hear people complaining about Bruce's voice on LAD (never was annoyed by it myself, although I had some trouble with his shouting on The Number of the Beast) but let's take a look at other aspects.
Besides his performance, it's also about the performance of song material.
Rock in Rio material, not on Live After Death:
Sign of the Cross, The Clansman, The Wicker Man, Brave New World, Ghost of the Navigator, Blood Brothers, The Mercenary, Dream of Mirrors, The Evil That Men Do & Fear of the Dark: I give you that this is not an unimpressive list.
But now, let's take a look at these songs that are on Live After Death and not on Rock in Rio:
Aces High (still the best played performance), Flight of Icarus (a relic, the last official outcry of a little jewel), Revelations (not my favourite but its energy can't be denied), Rime of the Ancient Mariner & Powerslave (no explanation needed; a live album with these two should be adored to the max), Running Free (legendary version), Children of the Damned, 22 Acacia Avenue, Die With Your Boots On (best ever version), and a magnificent and fast (the way it should be played; check that drumming!) version of Phantom of the Opera. Besides all these we have The Trooper. Not just a version, it's still the best version, just listen to Bruce on this one!
The live performances on Live After Death have unmistakably contributed to the identity of these classic tracks.
Now the sound:
Have all of you listened to Live After Death via headphones? The quality of the recording is phenomenal. And the guitar sound is really fat, every micro inch of the playing can be heard. Not only the solos are a joy to the ears, but also the other parts, which are a bit more difficult to distinguish on Rock in Rio. E.g., on Rime, you can hear so well the different roles and styles Adrian and Dave are playing. Between and under these guitars we get an excellent presentation of the carrying foundation, the beating heart of the band, the best rhythm tandem in metal of all times (I say metal, so I don't count Rush here), with Nicko and Steve heading closely towards their pinnacle form of their careers.
