Libya in new hands

Re: Allied Forces at War with Libyan Regime

The B-52 is a good guess, as it was developed in the 50s and has seen continuous service since then (Wikipedia says 1955). Also the F-4 Phantom II has seen really long service time, hasn't it? The Germans were using it far into the 2000s, right?

We're not taking out a dictatorship. We're helping a popular movement that is trying to take out one, and that would be wholesale slaughtered

The United Nations mandate is for protecting the civilian population. Not to help the rebels. But of course the more we weaken Gaddaffi, the more we strengthen the rebels and their eagerness for their cause. But we are giving the rebels reason to believe that they have mighty powers behind them, when we are really there to help the civilian population. One problem arises though, when the rebels become strong and offensive enough, do we then have to protect the civilain population from the rebels? What would we do if the rebels use artillery and tanks against Tripoli or other cities. Then the UN suddenly might have to protect the civilian population that is on Gaddafis side and fight back at the rebels.

I don't think so. Judging from what I hear - admittedly, it's all Al Jazeera, but that is the only source I trust on Middle Eastern affairs at the moment - the rebels more or less are the people.

Re: Allied Forces at War with Libyan Regime

The resolution can say whatever it says, but anyone is fooling themselves if they do not think the ultimiate goal is regime change.

Re: Allied Forces at War with Libyan Regime

Khaddafi's residential compound was hit by a tomahawk.
Damn, they missed him LOL.

Re: Allied Forces at War with Libyan Regime

A reporter for Britain's
Channel 4 said six
villagers were shot and
injured as a US helicopter
attempted to rescue the
crew.
This is what I'm talking about. I'm sorry if I got it wrong, but it seems that the soldiers shot the people that saved the pilot...?

Re: Allied Forces at War with Libyan Regime

I don't see that reported on the BBC or Al Jazeera, so I will think that is not a very good report.

Re: Allied Forces at War with Libyan Regime

OK, I'm sure someone has addressed this, but why is the leader of Libya only a Colonel?

Re: Allied Forces at War with Libyan Regime

That was his rank when he overthrew the government.

Re: Allied Forces at War with Libyan Regime

I was gonna ask that too. So why don't they call him something else like, Dictator. It's a bit odd when I turn on the news and they say Colonel Khadaffi

OK, that makes sense.  I'm somewhat surprised that he didn't promote himself.

I have to say that I'm already tired of his bluster.  Claiming victory, etc.  Yet, I'm also surprised at what kind of damage a small country can cause.

Wonder why he hasn't promoted himself. Idi Amin made himself Field Marshal.

Re: Allied Forces at War with Libyan Regime

Isn't it obvious? Qaddafi is too humble for self-promotion.

Re: Allied Forces at War with Libyan Regime

np666, if that were true, I think it would have been picked up by Al Jazeera at least. The person isn't citing any sources other than their own editor, so I am calling bullshit on that one.

See, it was so obvious that I overlooked it.

Re: Allied Forces at War with Libyan Regime

He already had all this sparkly colonel uniforms made up, why promote yourself and have to re-do them.
