Amateurs indeed! :) As my friend always said, when driving a 4-cylinder car, a stick gives you something to do while waiting to accelerate. I do like having my trucks be automatic, for some reason...
 
My husband won't drive anything else but stick unless he has to and this is the reason why I now have a stick shift and when we have kids, they will also learn stick.
 
There are times an auto is nice... you just hafta put it in gear and not think. I'd imagine a lot of stop and go traffic would be nice for an auto [Cornfed, what's LA like with a stick?]. I know that when I was with a friend backing a boat down a ramp into water, an auto is much nicer to use...
 
On my end of things, stop and go traffic with a stick is pretty annoying. I enjoyed driving my auto I had before in that sort of traffic because it was easier to just go.

My car has both, so I shift in the hills (where I live) and use fully automatic in the flats (where I work). In the U.S., the cars that are exclusively manual tend to be either the cheaper budget models or the super-expensive sports cars. My current car is in the middle, and has what's sometimes called a "tiptronic" transmission ("Tiptronic" is actually a Porsche mark, but other cars like my Infiniti use similar tech), so I can switch between manual and automatic on the fly. It's not "really" manual, as there is no clutch pedal, but it's nice to be able to downshift when on a steep hill or when I need to accelerate quickly. I have driven a stick-shift many times, typically when I rent a car in foreign countries, and I think automatic is much, much better. I don't usually hit bad traffic in my commute, but I would think that having to constantly shift in heavy traffic would drive me insane.

It's just a matter of getting used to it. I wouldn't know what to do with my right hand, if I drove automatic. :D

EDIT: It's not just this thread. I didn't get the alert for the Bruce survivor either.
 
I first started my training in July and I officially went on my own I think end of August, beginning of September. So I've been driving for about 2 months.
