NP: Emperor - The Prophet

For the record, I find Rage Against The Machine really repetitive and banal.  I dislike excessive stop-start riffing and 'groove' metal anyway (Pantera, Machine Head), so I'm not exactly best-placed to like them.

See, there's the difference. I love groove metal and start-stop riffing. Not only is it great fun to listen to, but it's especially great fun to play on bass.

NP: Emperor - The Tongue Of Fire

This album rocks. Yes, it's not a bit like 'In The Nightside Eclipse', but then, none of their four albums is treading over the same material again and again.  The fact that Ihsahn writes all of the album makes for interesting listening, and the use of the string ensemble adds wonderful shades of light and dark, in all the right places.  It may not be pure Black Metal, but calling it 'Symphonic Black' isn't far off the mark, and Dimmu Borgir, this is not.
 
Over the last few days, I've been capturing my old video cassettes onto my laptop. Cliff 'em All was one of the first ones I did (damn Metallica for not releasing it on DVD for region 2), and I have to say, it's a good watch. Really reminds me how good they were back then.

Since when is Thrash Metal (Pantera) "groove" metal?

Speaking of laptops,  I'm considering buying one.  What should I expect from a laptop?  What brands do you suggest (I'm thinking about Acer or HP,  but I'll welcome anything else).  I've heard (though it's probably b*llshit) that after 3-4 years you have to change it.  Anyone?

Actually Pantera is groove Metal. Ive only heard their first 2 albums, and although Cowboys from hell is a bit more thrashy, its still groove Metal. Although some songs are pretty fast, they are no where near the speeds of late 80's thrash. That plus the stop - start 'Chugging' riffing like Raven said.

I have to support my peeps at Apple :D the Macbook is a good laptop. You can get it as low as $1000 and for just under $2000 you can have it upgraded to two GB of RAM and a 250 GB HD. It also includes the latest version of iLife, Apples suite of digital media Apps which include the all new iMovie (you can edit videos even faster now), iPhoto (the photo library is better organized), iDVD (hasn't changed too much from the previous version), Garage band (a new feature lets you create music easier using a virtual band or something like that), and of course iTunes.

All the new Macs are Intel based and can run either Windows Vista or XP (so you get the best of both worlds really). So you can boot up in either windows or Mac OS. You can also run Windows while on the Mac OS as an emulator and there is a third way I don't remember at the moment. Personally I think running it directly is better. Also the new version of Mac Os 10 has awesome new features like automated back up of data AND, this is really cool, "Time machine". A feature that lets you go "back in time" to find lost files.

As for changing them every four years, frankly any computer after a year is "old". My seven year old "Bubble" iMac is a freaking dinosaur by now. You will have to buy it a new battery after a year regardless of brand, but it will still be functional as far as software is concerned.

It's not like Pantera didn't singularly popularise the genre...

Anyway, Hell Awaits or Bonded By Blood, Cowboys From Hell certainly isn't.

I think popularise would be the correct term (Pantera also popularised being a moron, but that's another story), although the more groove oriented speed metal was originally pioneered by Exhorder. While we're on this particular subject, there was one meeting between Dimebag Darrell and James Hetfield in 1985 that I find hilarious. At this point, Darrell had a "wall of glam" in his room, with pictures of Bon Jovi and whatnot. James spit on it, and Darrell, instead of getting angry, joined in. And then of course, there's the whole act of dropping glam metal after the 80s. Ironic, since Pantera regarded themselves as "trendkillers". I know I'm harping on about it but Pantera are high on the list of my most loathed bands ever. Thanks for inviting more chest beating cage monkeys into metal, Pantera, we really needed them. *Warning: Contains mild irony*

Back to the laptop thing, I forgot to mention Macbooks have built in Web/picture cam, microphone and have a Cd/DVD burner :D
 
It depends on which Mac...the cheapest and smallest Macbook doesnt have a DVD burner...but all of them have a a built in webcam (which I have not a clue how to use but whatever)...

Sony has been doing that for some time now. And my old, old, old laptop had a built in mic. :D

I have a Toshiba laptop (as was my old one) and they're pretty good for their price. But at the end of the day, the biggest problem is the OS they run on.
