I read that some Twitter employees were asked to work 12hours /day, seven days a week, which would apply sleeping in office for some. I wonder was that a written request? And is it even legal to ask something like that?

Sounds like how we did things back in the "dot-com boom" 22-25 years ago. At the rate Elon Musk is taking Twitter backwards, they'll be printing tweets in a newspaper by next week.
