Yes, I studied that area in that period. There was some doubt about how much was actively promoted by the Cathar religious elite, and to what extent, and how much was blown out of proportion by the inquisition. They were trying to demonstrate that these beliefs and associated practices were 'wrong' on every level, and went out looking for and recording certain practices, including adultery, to demonstrate beyond all doubt to anyone interested that there was nothing commendable whatsoever about this new form of religion. There was more at stake than religion, too. The social system in this region wasn't in line with what you might call the medieval ideal, and there may have been a distinct culture/nationality emerging that was at odds with the traditional established kingdoms.
