He's always up for vacation.
You guys know you're always welcome, but I recommend a summer visit rather than a winter one ;)

Honestly, I am not sure what exactly I will be using this for .... beyond try to print out an Eddie or something.

But, I think the technology behind these is just cool as hell and might end up being one of the key inventions of our time.

I read an article about how NASA is testing these for space use. When you think of all the tools they have to carry with them, being able to bring up some plastic and make them on the fly to replace broken ones, create non critical ones for one time use, etc ... it is really the first generation replicator ala Star Trek.

I did find a list of tools I can make with it, just for around the house. I was commenting to my wife about how much crap we have in the garage that we bought for a one time deal and will probably never use again, assuming we could even find it again or remember we bought it.

That might be the most practical thing I can think I would use it for

But mostly, it will just be cool to have one.

Depending on the quality, I would use one to print things like game pieces or possibly miniatures. Such a cool concept, and it really blows my mind. Absolutely, I agree with everything you have to say.

OK, I was possibly using a wider definition of "our time" than you had in mind :) But yeah, 3D printing is a major achievement and it is already seeing applications in medicine.

it should have major applications in virtually everything ... in theory and I think at some point in practice, everyone will essentially have a mini factory in their home.

A limitation may be on materials though. I'm not sure, but I think a 3D printer for metal or wood, which still will be the preferred materials for many applications, would be much more expensive than commercially available 3D printers of today.

For sure, it is still in the incredibly early stages and not really practical at consumer prices .. but I am pretty sure it will happen .. just a matter of how long it will take.

I'd love a 3D printer. I know a modeller who had one, though, and it wasn't producing good enough quality prints for her, and wasn't really cost effective. She went back to old school sculpting, mould making and resin casting.

I now get custom minis printed via 3d printing online. It's expensive, and probably because they have a high-quality printer and materials, but I suspect the technology to print my own custom ones is getting closer and closer.

Loads of schools seem to have good ones. I wish they'd let the general public use them. Surely it would be useful funding at a time when they're having to get rid of staff and make all kinds of cutbacks.

You know Cried, GM are actually my real name initials so you might have hit the proverbial nail on the head here. Also, Am gnus, with gnus not really flattering in Bulgarian and probably some other Slavic languages as well.
