Let's try and get 1,000,000 replies to this post

I'm up at 6:30 AM and got nothing to do.
Aren't timezones weird? It's 11:34 PM by me, sitting in bed in Eastern Standard Time. It's so weird being on this forum where half the people are waking up at the same time that I'm going to bed.

Well I stayed up the entire night so the latter part of your post doesn't apply to me for today. :D

Lots of flooding in Houston. I live on high ground away from street so we are fine but many in Houston are in trouble. Some homes are flooded and people have had to go into their attic! Many drivers trapped on freeway overpasses with news crews. Still 2-3 more days of rain from Harvey (now downgraded to a Tropical storm) to look forward to.

Plenty of tornado warnings & watches last night. Tornado tore roofs of homes 20 miles from me last night.

Glad you are okay. My Aunt lives in north Houston. ... she is fine too. In Dallas we got a whole 1/4 inch of rain

Bought a 3-D printer kit from Amazon a month ago .. finally going to put it together today.

Some assembly (read: complete assembly) required. My son is coming up to help, we shall see how his engineering skills are, because I know mine suck.

Motivation: If we successfully print something: We have 2 racks of ribs and beer for dinner. Failure= a ham sandwich and water

End result should look like this

Glad to hear you're okay. Hopefully everything stays safe for you, but it sounds like an absolute shitshow there.

I suspect he will do just fine. It comes with instructions, yeah?

Sorry to hear that. My thoughts are with you.

I re-looked at the links 74 and 27 pages .. but yeah .. still a lot of work. On the other hand, I will have a pretty decent 3-D printer for under $300.
That's actually a pretty good deal. If I buy one, will you fly the kid up here to put mine together? :D

He's always up for vacation.

Honestly, I am not sure what exactly I will be using this for .... beyond try to print out an Eddie or something.

But, I think the technology behind these is just cool as hell and might end up being one of the key inventions of our time.

I read an article about how NASA is testing these for space use. When you think of all the tools they have to carry with them, being able to bring up some plastic and make them on the fly to replace broken ones, create non critical ones for one time use, etc ... it is really the first generation replicator ala Star Trek.

I did find a list of tools I can make with it, just for around the house. I was commenting to my wife about how much crap we have in the garage that we bought for a one time deal and will probably never use again, assuming we could even find it again or remember we bought it.

That might be the most practical thing I can think I would use it for

But mostly, it will just be cool to have one.
