Weeell... Saap has his Blink 182, DJ James is all over Taylor Swift, Flash has Britney, Sixes is a hip-hopper, I have my U2 and Enrique Iglesias and even Mosh seems to like Kiss enough for some weird reason. What's yours inexplicable affinity, Brigs?

BTW I would write here I want to give up the Rush commented discography thread in order to do a thorough Spock's Beard/Neal Morse discography thread and then U2 discography thread shortly afterwards, but I'm quite afraid the net/the forum would break in two then... :innocent:

What do you class is inexplicable? I'm fond of U2. I listened to a lot of Placebo at one time. Oh wait, a-ha. It has to be a-ha. I liked them long after they stopped being mainstream bouncy pop popular.

Mosh and I are hiphop fans as well, though. :D

But bouncy pop popular is awesome too! There was actually a time when I played this song - and only this song, mind ye - for three days straight. If I had last.fm back then, I would probably broke some kind of record, cause the count of listens might have gone into hundreds, tens at least. In fact, I think my left earphone gave in near the end :D

I like a-ha enough to keep the album that song is featured on (Hunting High and Low) on my iTunes archive.

And I don't have Systematic Chaos on it. :p

I really want to see the Spock's thread happen, so I'd gladly take the Rush discography off your hands if that would make it happen faster. :p

Re Kiss: I really think they're a band you had to grow up with to really enjoy. I got into them literally at the same time as Maiden and they were pretty much tied for my favorite band. Obviously one band has more substance than the other and has remained on top through the years. But at least once a year I go back to the old Kiss albums and DVDs cause I do genuinely enjoy a lot of their music.

Hip hop is a more recent discovery for me and I'm still finding a lot of new stuff. It's a bit more representative of where my tastes are now where I probably wouldn't give Kiss much thought if I heard them for the first time today.

(Hunting High and Low)

That title track is great too!

I remember suggesting you to check out Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) quite a while ago in the chat. Well, have you?

A couple of really good tracks on there. Take On Me was the song that led me to get the album. Living a Boy's Adventure Tale is also really good.

Please do! I mean, I will definitely participate in that one, but to listen to each and every album and to write down a coherent opinion on each when I am not currently in a Rush mood at all is a chore. Just let me sprinkle an idea or two around. I don't know how that happened. When I started, Rush were positively my #3 band or so... not even a year later I play them only when I want to continue with that thread... only to fail again.

I can understand this - they can be pretty good from time to time and especially Frehley is awesome. Black Diamond or Strutter are great hard rock tunes (though the final slow down in the former is just a travesty, same as with Manowar's Black Wind F&S - why do these bands have to f*** up the best song on the album???) Yet they also have this tendency to be really annoyingly dumb and songs like Charisma make you want to beg your brain cells to not leave you in swarms.

And to be completely honest, I like me some hip hop too, but I still have trouble acknowledging it as a genuine genre, however snobbish it might seem. 36 Chambers is a classic. WU TANG CLAN AIN'T NUTHIN TA FUCK WIT!!!

But when you dig deeper you find they have a large body of work lurking on b-sides and albums that's melancholy, introspective or even verging on dark. There are 10 studio albums! Quite varied styles, too. I'd like to hear other bands pick up and cover some of their songs, just to test how their basic songwriting holds up.

Not yet, but it's on the list. I don't listen to hip hop often so it takes me a long time to get to stuff.

I'm always up for talking Rush so I won't have a problem with that. We could also maybe fit in a survivor sometime? It has actually been awhile.

SMX had a pretty cool explanation about hiphop's legitimacy as a genre. It completely revolutionized music. Producers pushed the boundaries of what music meant. They didn't play instruments, they sampled things, twisted them, bended them, put them together as something new. Kind of like a collage of sorts. That was already a thing in visual arts, but not in music.

Not to mention hiphop having the best lyricism out of any musical genre there is. (Talking about the good hiphop artists, of course)

It's an amazing album. One I feel comfortable putting in a high pedestal without worrying about the risk of the person that I'm suggesting it to being disappointed after hearing it.

Hip hop is a supremely legitimate musical genre. I agree with everything you said, @The Flash! The thing that makes it seem illegitimate is that I think it's the genre with the largest amount of untalented performers receiving the majority of the popularity.

You're going to get that with any genre that becomes mainstream. It was the same with Metal in the 80s. Luckily with the internet it's really easy to get to the good stuff with hip hop. I genuinely think it's currently the most exciting and innovative genre.
