Hip hop is a supremely legitimate musical genre. I agree with everything you said, @The Flash! The thing that makes it seem illegitimate is that I think it's the genre with the largest amount of untalented performers receiving the majority of the popularity.

That's probably it, yeah. For every Lil Wayne, Soulja Boy, 2 Chainz, Pitbull, Iggy Azalea and Nicki Minaj there is a Rakim, Nas, GZA, Aesop Rock, Kendrick Lamar, Ghostface Killah and Raekwon.

SMX had a pretty cool explanation about hiphop's legitimacy as a genre. It completely revolutionized music. Producers pushed the boundaries of what music meant. They didn't play instruments, they sampled things, twisted them, bended them, put them together as something new. Kind of like a collage of sorts. That was already a thing in visual arts, but not in music.

Not to mention hiphop having the best lyricism out of any musical genre there is. (Talking about the good hiphop artists, of course)

I understand the first point, but to me it isn't enough. If it helps, I also have problems accepting modern and post-modern visual arts, like these collages you talk about. I kind of feel there might be something artistic and respectable about it, but I have problems feeling it myself. It's, like, too detached, or something. After all this time, I still see no reason why should I listen to Gangsta's Paradise, when I can go straight to the Stevie Wonder original, which is also a part of one of the best "black" albums I've ever heard (not being racist, the "black" is merely fact stating). I realise it's mostly about the rhythm and the production and the lyrics and the delivery... but the melody is often reused from an older song and the recontextualisation is not enough for me.

The best lyricism is debatable, IMHO. Though they are often quite crafty with the words and some are absolutely amazing (for what it's worth, the "mainsteam" and "too popular - for n00bs" Eminem is Zappa's equal as far as vocabulary and society criticism and jaded sense of humour and sarcasm in general is concerned, IMHO), but again - I rarely find the real "poetry" I search for. I cannot imagine a hip hopper to come with something like Starblind (lyrics-wise) or even Bernie Taupin, though I might be just ignorant.

EDIT: BUT - and I need to stress this - IRYO, guys, I don't intend to be offensive in any way. :)

You're just missing the rappers you're looking for. Check out some of Rakim, Notorious B.I.G., GZA rhymes for example. They've written some of the most poetic lyrics I've ever seen.

Kendrick Lamar's To Pimp a Butterfly is one of the greatest concept albums ever conceived, the imagery and the symbolism are incredibly strong. And that's just an example, of course.

Gangsta's Paradise is a bit of an outlier though, it's pretty much a direct sample. I'm not a huge fan of direct samples myself. They don't really fit the collage label either. There are ridiculously talented hiphop producers who have produced some of the most haunting melodies ever; taking stuff from jazz, funk etc. DJ Premier, RZA, J Dilla, Dr. Dre come to mind. These people have developed their own styles as well, when you hear a beat you know who the producer is without checking it.

Hiphop has recently developed into an instrumental genre as well, that should be telling a story. There are a lot of instrumental hiphop projects out there.

Okay, will try this one out soon. :)

Also, what this makes for me harder is the fact that hip hop is really hard for me to... analyse? Assess in any way? I know I don't like 2Pac, though everybody might love him, on the other hand I quite enjoyed Biggie. And I don't even know why. I just cannot state any reasons, and it frustrates me in a way.

Also, listening through a whole Public Enemy album is a chore, though I actually like them a lot ... or I think I do. I'm just very confused about the genre in general. :D

I generally don't get much out of sample based Hip Hop. I do like the way Public Enemy did it but I'm less impressed by that sort of thing today. The ease of access we have now has taken a bit away from the art of sampling.

I really like the use of acoustic instruments mixed with electronic beats on Kendrick Lamar's stuff. Anything with a Jazz influence is going to pique my interest. I also like more experimental beats like what you find on Clipping.

I just listened to every song on this list:

http://pitchfork.com/features/lists-and-guides/9772-the-best-metal-albums-of-2015/

Is this seriously what people consider "metal" these days? Other than a few bands, all of this music just makes me bored, sad, and sleepy.
I only recognized 6 bands from that list (High On Fire, Paradise Lost, Baroness, Mgla, Tribulation, Horrendous). I only listened to 2 albums from that list (Paradise Lost and Baroness) and I only really liked the PL album :P

I find that slightly refreshing. I was expecting something-core bands, rather than black/doom/death metal and a bit of more arty stuff. They certainly haven't gone down a populist route.

I enjoy the Baroness albums. Mainly Yellow and Green

The cold is making my breathing sound a bit like Darth Vader. Appropriate, then, that I watched ep. 1 through 6 between last Thursday and Monday ...

Night Prowler's doctor adventures:

So this morning I went to the student infirmary to see what's going on with my ears. My doctor works in the morning, but apparently switched shifts this day so I went to another one (who turned out to be much better than my regular doctor). When I entered she asked me if I came to have an eye checkup. I said "no, why?" and she was like "they are very red" :P I've had that problem for years now and it doesn't hurt or anything and checkups I did over the years didn't show any damage or allergies or anything. So my blood pressure is OK, pulse is OK, but throat is sore, nose is swollen and combine that with the ear problem and red eyes, she thought I might have an allergy or something. Gave me a referral to an ophthalmologist in the same facility but the otolaryngologist was out on vacation and they didn't have anyone else so they gave me a referral to a hospital.
So according to the ophthalmologist I might need glasses  I couldn't read anything from the bottom row in that eyesight test until she put on some lenses. Next Tuesday I have to go to have my pupils dilated and then they'll know if I'll need glasses, but she says it's very likely. Dunno if this is any way connected to the ear problem though.
Anyway, I go to that other hospital and no one wants to check me up. They were just sending me from one person to another even though I had a valid reason to be there + the referral. They didn't have any patients, they were just sitting around doing nothing, still didn't want to check me up <_< So they tell me to go to a 3rd place which will surely take me in, but nope, same situation <_< At least this place actually had some patients/excuse.
Anyway, scheduled an appointment at a private infirmary for tomorrow. Hopefully it's just some allergy or something else treatable.
