I'll just toss in the consideration that there are people who have beards and long hair and groom them in consideration of their outward appearance, and such who obviously don't care for it. The latter will probably have difficulty finding a job in the service sector indeed.
 
Oh. That sounds worryingly familiar. Are you looking for complete change of career or just a different employer?

I'm having to look at a real change. The industry I'm in isn't in a healthy state, and most employers within in have a poor reputation for treatment of staff.

Well, for me personally, one could: change employer (but do the same thing); change role (whether with the same employer or not) but remain in the same sector; change role &/or sector & really do something quite different (but remain in your profession); or, lastly, leave your profession (--although one might end up doing something related e.g. you can "manage" in any sector/profession). I'm not even contemplating the last option, but I certainly feel like I need a change of scenery. Just too much pressure.
