Sometimes I wonder where do my ancestors come from. I know my mother's side to a certain degree, my great grandfather was a Crimean Tatar who fled during October Revolution, about 30 years before all Crimean Tatars were forcibly deported. But I have no idea about my father's side. Many people can break down their ethnic backgrounds, 1/16 this, 1/8 that etc. I wish I could do that as well.
 
My dad's side were Scots that emigrated to Ohio in the mid-1800s, then up to Canada to work in the coal mines a generation or two later.
Mom's side is a little harder to track, but her dad's parents were English immigrants and her mom's side French Canadians from Prince Edward Island who had been in Canada for a long time.
 
If the records are there then it's possible. My mother's Auntie got a genealogist to trace her ancestry and he found out that it can be traced as far back as the first half of the 19th century to an island in the North Atlantic called St. Kilda. The island is now deserted and I think is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The man who lived there was my Great-Great-Great-Great Grandfather!

My father's side goes back to Germany, the Netherlands, and Belgium, but they've been in America via New York for so long that everyone has pretty much lost the information dating back further than the 1800's. My mother is a second generation American, with an Irish father whose family can be traced back to one of the oldest clans in Ireland, and an Italian mother from the northern-most mountain ranges. I'm a mutt!
