What a nice topic for a Christmas dinner. :P I got a bit of an angry reply when I said that my opinion on papacy and the Catholic Church is not subject to change because of Bergoglio., but as you know, I'm used to that. ;)

Traditionally, in the Commonwealth of Nations, on this day the Christmas box was opened. People could put a gift in it for the poor. Also on Boxing Day the traditional foxhunts were held. Now the day is important to other sports such as football and horse racing.

We call this day Second Christmas Day here (and in Northern Europe).
I looked it up and (at least) in these nations the 26th is a holiday:
Belgium (German community), Bulgaria, Cyprus, Denmark, Germany (traditionally not Nordrhein-Westfalen and Saarland but lately more often), Estonia, France (Elzas-Lotharingen), Finland, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Austria, Poland, Romania, Slovenia, Slovakia, Czech Republic, the UK, Sweden en Switzerland.

The US and Canada can go back to work again.

You steadfast Kraut! ;)

So I'm just a slave because I work today.
And all my Facebook friends' photos from ski resorts and night clubs really piss me off.

Haha! I get that.

I'm working today as well. Meh. I really didn't have anything to do, kids are off to their mom's and I didn't want to clean the house today.

Maybe if you ask LooseCannon he will lend you that gladius of his and you can go all Spartacus on them.

So, of the gifts I gave this year, one was a bull's eye and the rest were of the 'oh thank you so much' type that stays under the tree for the rest of the holidays.

My wife and I did a joint present and we chipped in for a new TV (which we bought a month ago) .. beyond that we really do not do gifts with many people ... decided a while ago we were all just giving each other crap we really do not need and started just giving small personal things (framed pictures of the kids, etc) and making a group donation to a charity

I enjoy making gifts to make people happy, and I always try to pay close attention to what people want. But if I get a ' what I really want for Christmas is...' and I go out of my way to get it, I can't help but feel a little cheated when it doesn't get as much as a glance when the wrapping paper is gone.

Same here .. I think to going with the more personal gifts do that versus I need to spend $X on everyone and let that drive the gift more than the meaning.

I completely understand that.

I got my youngest a gift for christmas that I was sure she wanted, and I was completely wrong. She was very gracious about it, but I hate it when I whiff on a gift for my kids.

Yeah .. kids and the older folks are our exceptions .. we buy stuff for them ... I guess my feeling is adults can buy crap they want. Spend money on them and we will chip in for some techie stuff for the oldsters that will make their lives easier and are things we know they would never think to buy on their own (tablets, portable DVD players, etc). It seems odd though to buy stuff for people in their working prime and have them give me stuff ..I can buy my own crap and so can they, but it is nice to get some inexpensive thing that I know they put some thought into
