Traditionally, in the Commonwealth of Nations, on this day the Christmas box was opened. People could put a gift in it for the poor. Also on Boxing Day the traditional foxhunts were held. Now the day is important to other sports such as football and horse racing.
We call this day
Second Christmas Day here (and in Northern Europe).
I looked it up and (at least) in these nations the 26th is a holiday:
Belgium (German community), Bulgaria, Cyprus, Denmark, Germany (traditionally not Nordrhein-Westfalen and Saarland but lately more often), Estonia, France (Elzas-Lotharingen), Finland, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Austria, Poland, Romania, Slovenia, Slovakia, Czech Republic, the UK, Sweden en Switzerland.
The US and Canada can go back to work again.
What a nice topic for a Christmas dinner.
I got a bit of an angry reply when I said that my opinion on papacy and the Catholic Church is not subject to change because of Bergoglio., but as you know, I'm used to that.
You steadfast Kraut!
