So for the first time ever, the rain was so bad it kept me from going to school today. o_O

Damn Breaking Bad is addictive (no pun intended). It's 2 am here now and I have to get up at 8 and take an exam but I can't stop watching.

For the life of me, I'll always be shocked at how Spencers is allowed to be an all ages store. They have items with the the word fuck openly displayed all over the place and VERY sexual stuff as well and they had a thing that said "I love crack whores" or something like that right there for all to read. Yet, there they are in malls of children of all ages just to walk into and see. Yes, by age 10 or so, there's nothing wrong with kids learning the basics about sex and drugs and such, but a 6 year old shouldn't be seeing the stuff that's in Spencers. I'd sure love to see the law or loophole in the law that allows the stuff they have.

I think it's up to parents to decide if a store is appropriate for their kid. I imagine most people know what's inside Spencer's and even if they don't it's pretty obvious by looking at the display windows that it is more geared toward adults.

A lot of the more adult things are in the back. They just have to keep there kids away from tha general area. I was in there with a friend of mine and a kid was going near the section and his mother steered him away from it.

Depends on the store too though, I know the one at the mall I go to has that stuff well hidden, but another one is pretty small and everything is cramped together.

Some stuff is in the back, but I've seen some pretty bad stuff near the front too. Ours is in the mall and stuff is not hidden well at all. And a lot of parents just walk in with their kids, but I guess as soon as they see what's in there, they would leave right away. I just wonder at how they get away with being all ages like that. Radio and TV bleep out the word fuck, but when it comes to a store in the mall, it's perfectly OK?

What is all boils down to is how responsible the parent is. Ok so either the parent doesn't let the kid go into the store or if they do, they can take actions to keep them away from the bad things in the store and if the kid asks about said bad things, the parent has the choice to tell them what it is or not.

They do put some stuff in the front ... for example, my daughter wanted some earring thing from there ... in the case were rings for tongue piercing with vibrators on them ... that seemed a bit iffy to me. But yeah, it is up to parents. I do not think everything needs to be explained to kids ...

I realize that it's up to the parents, but I wonder how they legally get away with being all ages when shit and fuck are bleeped on radio and TV. It's pretty strange how the law works sometimes.

TV (at least over the air stations) are regulated by the Feds because the airwaves are granted via the FCC. Cable TV could air or show anything they want, but usually does not to keep advertisers ... but you still see a show like Mad Men throw in a bullshit every episode as a reminder that they are on cable and the audience can expect anything. A store is similar to cable tv, their space is private. The only thing that I think could get in their way would be if they were declared a sex shop and could be subject to zoning laws.

That is what they try to do, walk as close to the line as possible to draw people into the store. I have no problem with them, I go in once in a while and get a laugh about some of their stuff ... and they have some cool stuff ... but I would not have wanted my kids in there when they were smaller .. but I also did not let them go to the mall at that age ...

I think it's important to "walk as close to the line as possible" every now and again, that goes more for things like TV than stores, but that's another conversation I suppose. It's shocking to some, yes, but some of that stuff shouldn't really be taboo anymore.

As for legality, I think they get away with it because nothing in the store is really pornographic. I could be wrong though, that's just a guess.

I bought an Iron Maiden shirt on sale there once, so they're alright with me.
