I think I'm seriously getting into new wave music. There are some true gems. Not only the synth influenced rock kind of new wave, but synthpop. Depeche Mode's Violator has been the main album of my playlist these days.
Synthpop is good stuff. Electronic music has gotten a lot better recently since musicians are able to use the technology better and not be overbearing with certain sounds. I recommend checking out synthpop stuff by lesser known artists, where the music comes first and there isn't as much of a concern with writing hits. There is more thought put into arrangements too, like if there's any dubstep it's used as a short effect for a bridge or something rather than a whole song going wub wub wub wub wub wub.

Also, good call on The Cars!

The albums I recently added to my "albums to get" list considering your suggestions and doing research:
Since I suggested The Cars, I'll follow up and put in a recommendation for Candy-O, which is more "new wave" than Heartbeat City, a more straightforward pop album. Plus, I like Candy-O better. Their Greatest Hits might be your best bet, though half of that will come from the self-titled debut, which is ridiculously good. I typically advise individual albums over best-of compilations, but that's not necessarily the case with The Cars -- though you'd miss out on the excellent title track to Candy-O.

None of the other albums on your list is better than Violator, by the way. You're pretty much starting at the top of the heap and working your way down. Truly a landmark album.

New Order is akin to the Iron Maiden of synthpop -- Joy Division, its precursor, might be the Judas Priest, and Kraftwerk the Sabbath.

My assistant's favorite band is The Cure -- based on what I know about you from this forum, I'm betting you'd like them. They are more goth/moody than danceable, but definitely a new wave icon. The only Cure album I own is Disintegration, though I think Staring at the Sea is a good compilation.

Forgive me if this is too obvious, but no song is more representative of 80s synth-pop than this (ground-breaking music video at the time, btw):
A recent Pitbull song is giving this one new life.

Take On Me was the first thing that popped into my head when synthpop was mentioned. I love it. Music video is cool too.

I've never thought of equating A-ha with Depeche Mode and New Order, which were known for a grittier sound. They are synthpop, though. I just think they were generally hailed for the more bouncy, happy chart-friendly stuff they did, even if some of their album and B-side stuff was a lot more sombre

With all this talk about synth pop and new wave bands, I've come to realize that I too like some of this music because I like some of the bands that were mentioned or at least some songs by some of the bands mentioned.

I bet it was Nat who made her do it anyway.

So my school district just declared tomorrow a snow day. It's not even snowing yet.

That happened here before. That really pissed alot of people off because it never ended up snowing really. It basically just rained/sleeted the whole day and any snow that did happen, pretty much melted right away. Hope you actually have true snow day. :P

Well I just looked and it did in fact snow. But because it is April I get the feeling that it will melt right away too. But I don't care because no school tomorrow! :D
