Or, if we are going to be stereotypical internet geeks, we suggest a conspiracy theory: Nobody expected that guy, and they knew about it and already changed the article name in advance.

I am very surprised and have a positive vibe with this Pope.

A Jesuit as stature (the first Jesuit Pope!), but Franciscan in the heart. He's from outside Europe, social minded, humble (simple gown), down to earth (spoke to the people as he'd known them personally)... damn he even said "Good evening". And he voted against Benedict during the previous election!

Who would have thought this. It sounds like a revolution. Although he is seen as orthodox on sexual matters, for instance, he is known to be liberal on social justice. And that's the impression he made on me as soon as I saw him. This is a Pope for the poor. Good to have a good Pope again!

I wonder how he will surprise us next time... more rights for animals?

edit:

"For me it was an inspired choice," says Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor, former head of the Roman Catholic church in England and Wales. He says Pope Francis is a "humble man" whose own "simplicity of life" will inspire others. "The very name is indicative of a new style," he says.

Meh, I'm disappointed. Not sure what I was expecting but judging by wikipedia he's just another conservative old coot who lives in the Middle Ages, the only difference being he happens to be Argentine (which may make him more mysogynistic, not less). He's against abortion, euthanasia, and gay rights (of any kind). He says he's a champion of the poor but how can you be that when you oppose the basic right of women to choose what goes on in their own body (and we all know the only way to successfully combat poverty is through the education and emancipation of women)? Bah humbug. And mindless sheeple applaud and cheer...

Yes. From a religious perspective not very deeply, and very much ashamed for what happened in the past years. But now my heart beats faster.

Funny fact: As a second study, this man studied chemistry!

Catholic Archbishop of Philadelphia Charles J. Chaput called newly elected Pope Francis “a man from the new heartland of the global Church” and a “wonderful choice.” In a written statement, Archbishop Chaput said Pope Francis has “extraordinary intellectual and cultural strengths,” is “deeply engaged in the issues of contemporary life,” and is “open to the new realities the Church faces.”

Expectations are high. But now he has to show it. At least we won't have another angry chamber scholar, offending so many people. So, on day one, it's already better than the last years.

By the way, I can imagine some atheists who might not like the idea of a popular, "good" Pope again. :)
They'll have less to be angry about and less to make fun of. :)

Probably all cardinals are like this. But I understand what you mean. Let me say this; if the Pope really has some influence, or if people really should pay attention to him, then at least we should be lucky with this man, because everyone expected a next Benedict. Lots of the cardinals were chosen by Benedict, by the way.

Don't forget that this Pope could give women a greater role in the church.
