Knowing him, he might pop in some day for old time's sake. It was back in the day when Maverick, LooseCannon, Iron Duke, SMX, Freaky and myself were the gang, with Owly and syl acting as voices of reason. Freaky was in a band called Nomad Soul back then, and half the forum regulars of the time got a credit in their first, and sadly only album.
Ah, that's cool for sure. I sure hope SMX comes back again too.

Bicycle races bore me to tears. Whenever I even think of those aerial shots of cyclist groups I get eyes teary of boredom. It's just fucking boring. And it takes so long. And male arses in spandex. And it's all rigged. I can't find any appeal.

I hear you. It's silly to watch a whole stage, really. Nothing ever happens.

Just a little "conversation" I just had with a guy on metal. I've put the logs into spoilers as they are reasonably long. And I'm EmperorBadger (that's my regular nick in most places). I was in shock at some points and laughing at others. Also there were a bunch of youtube links so I put the band name/song name next to them.

01[23:40] <%EmperorBadger> NP: Holy Wars... The Punishment Due
01[23:40] <%EmperorBadger> Yes to all you non metal fans that's the actual title of the song.
[23:41] <%Salazar> Wha'ts NP mean?
01[23:42] <%EmperorBadger> Now Playing
[23:43] <%Salazar> Another question.
[23:43] <%Salazar> What do you consider metal?
01[23:43] <%EmperorBadger> Well there's a ton of different genres.
[23:43] <%Salazar> I saw War Pigs, and I'd classify that as classic rock.
01[23:43] <%EmperorBadger> Things like Rainbow, Van Halen, Scorpions, Deep Purple are borderline
01[23:44] <%EmperorBadger> Black Sabbath is metal imo.
[23:44] <%Salazar> They are all Classic Rock
[23:44] <%Salazar> I guess everyone is entitled to there own opinion, but compared to the metal out today they are soft.
01[23:44] <%EmperorBadger> Maybe.
[23:44] <%Salazar> And could/should be considered classic rock, even though they were the forefront of it in the 80's
01[23:45] <%EmperorBadger> Salazar, what about Priest, Maiden etc?
[23:45] <%Salazar> All classic rock.
[23:45] <%Salazar> Hair metal at best.
01[23:46] <%EmperorBadger> Hair metal?
01[23:46] <%EmperorBadger> Wow
[23:46] <%Salazar> Conjoining of a hair band and metal.
[23:46] <%Salazar> Was making a pass at them being weak now-a-days
01[23:46] <%EmperorBadger> Call this hair metal, I dare ya -
<<< Painkiller
[23:46] <%Salazar> Don't get me wrong they're great bands.
[23:46] <&NobodyExpects> will someone hold my other hand?
[23:47] <%Salazar> I'm calling Preist hairmetal
[23:47] <%Salazar> I really like Preist, and most of the bands you're probably listening too.
[23:47] <%Salazar> I gee up listing to them since my father was only 21 when I was born, and was big into the classic metal, and rock
01[23:49] <%EmperorBadger> Ok Salazar, what's the sofest band you'd consider "metal"
[23:49] <%Salazar> probably hatebreed
[23:49] <%Salazar> or do you mean in the classic sense?
01[23:50] <%EmperorBadger> Well both
01[23:50] <%EmperorBadger> Modern and classic
[23:52] <%Salazar> I'm a real big fan of Megadeth
[23:53] <%Salazar> and Queensrcyhe
[23:53] <%Salazar> and i do enjoy Motorhead on some occasions
01[23:54] <%EmperorBadger> lol
01[23:54] <%EmperorBadger> hmmmm
[23:54] <%Salazar> then i can listen to
[23:54] <%Salazar>
<<< Behemoth - Conquer All
01[23:54] <%EmperorBadger> I just find it weird that you consider queensyrche and Motorhead metal and yet Priest Maiden etc are classic rock.
[23:55] <%Salazar> no i consider those classic rock as well
[23:55] <%Salazar> i don't consider most classic rock form the 80's to be metal
[23:55] <%Salazar> if any
[23:55] <%Salazar> That's not to say Priest doesn't have the same heavier sound that the ones listed do
01[23:56] <%EmperorBadger> Hmmmmmm
01[23:56] <%EmperorBadger> So basically the heaviest bands of the 70s are all "classic rock"?
[00:00] <%Salazar> I don't consider bands form the 80's to be metal either.
[00:00] <%Salazar> I love what they did for bands to be able to do heavy music today though
01[00:00] <%EmperorBadger> wha really?
[00:01] <@Timberland[AI]> i love 80's big hair bands
[00:01] <@Timberland[AI]> quiet riot, twisted sister
01[00:02] <%EmperorBadger> Ok Salazar
01[00:02] <%EmperorBadger> Let me see.
[00:02] <%Salazar> They have elements of metal, yes, but I don't consider them metal in today's standard.
[00:03] <%Salazar> To say they produced the same level of sound as today's metal is disingenuous at best.
01[00:04] <%EmperorBadger> Megadeth, Slayer, Venom, Exodus, Kreator, Death, Cannibal Corpse just to name a couple
01[00:04] <%EmperorBadger> None of them are metal bands?
[00:05] <%Salazar> Cannibal Cropse is the only one that would compare to today's metal.
[00:05] <%Salazar> but then again i didn't know they came out in the 80's
[00:07] <%Salazar> I like most of those bands you just mentioned, but to say that they created the same sound, and intensified sound of metal compared to today's genre of metal, doesn't give justice to what bands did now, and then.
[00:08] <%Salazar>
<<< Eyefear - Redemption
[00:08] <%Salazar> I'm not saying this defines metal in todays genre.
[00:09] <%Salazar> At all, but I would consider them a modern day version of yesteryear metal, and a combination of todays metal.
[00:10] <%Salazar> Then we have
<<< Lamb of God - Redneck
[00:11] <%Salazar> Then i showed behemouth
[00:11] <%Salazar>
<<< Dimmu Borgir - Dimmu Borgir
[00:12] <%Salazar> Dimu isn't heavy but still eptimises metal, but I wouldn't necessarily call them metal.
[00:12] <&NobodyExpects> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QgpzLUCY0rU <<< Raining Blood
01[00:12] <%EmperorBadger> NE, that's not metal according to Salazar :P
[00:12] <%Salazar> Classic rock, yes
[00:13] <%Salazar> Great song, but it wouldn't be classified as metal in todays standard
01[00:16] <%EmperorBadger> I'm not kidding when I say this, but you are the first person I've ever seen to call Raining blood "classic rock"
[00:16] <%Salazar> Really?
01[00:16] <%EmperorBadger> yes
[00:17] <%Salazar> I guess i can succumb and call it classic metal.
[00:17] <%Salazar> But then again, I don't feel that's accurate
01[00:18] <%EmperorBadger> What would you label Porcupine Tree?
[00:21] <%Salazar> i had to go youtube them
[00:21] <%Salazar> are we listening to the same band
[00:21] <%Grendel> Salazar you are ........................insane
[00:21] <%Salazar> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JTEWlSTQ1RI <<< Porcupine Tree - Time Flies
[00:21] <%Salazar> ?
[00:22] <%Salazar> The friends I keep, and I, do not believe you can lump 70/80's metal together, it would be disingenuous to each style of "metal"
01[00:22] <%EmperorBadger> I just want to know what you label it
[00:23] <%Salazar> I guess we could classify it as classic metal, because it's not rock, but then again
01[00:23] <%EmperorBadger> And yes that's Porcupine Tree
[00:23] <%Grendel> if any metalhead [other then you] asked you to name a metal band and you said Iron Maiden the would be like "okay"
[00:23] <%Salazar> It just dones't have the same quality as today's metal
[00:23] <%Grendel> are they as thrashing as others? no but definitely a heavy metal band
[00:24] <%Grendel> Slayer without a doubt is metal
[00:24] <%Salazar> I'm ok with people thinking Maiden is metal, in terms of considering it against other music it came out with, yes it's metal.
[00:24] <%Salazar> If I compared it to todays metal, it is not metla.
[00:24] <%WindBender> lol
[00:25] <%WindBender> isn't Slayer trash metal
[00:25] <%WindBender> and Maiden heavy metal
[00:25] <%Grendel> thrash
[00:25] <%WindBender> and new metal shit metal?
01[00:25] <%EmperorBadger> WindBender, yes
[00:25] <%Grendel> there are a million different types of metal but all are metal
01[00:25] <%EmperorBadger> and *thrash
[00:26] <%Salazar> I do point out that don't listen to metal today, or from the 70/80's
[00:26] <%WindBender> yeah thrash lol
[00:26] <%Salazar> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OiNAact_1vM <<< August Burns Red - Empire
[00:26] <%Salazar> Is what I normally listen to
[00:27] <%Salazar> then i listen to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zP5GWYXp4d0 <<< Mark Lanergan Band - The Gravedigger's Song
[00:27] <%Grendel[Ai]> okay and I listent to Amon Amarath but still most of those bands you are calling classic rock I still think are definitely metal
[00:27] <%WindBender> Salazar I don't like it D:
[00:28] <%Salazar> ABR does do clean vocals, you just need to get to them
[00:28] <%Salazar> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ELD_UqMJIV0 <<< A Lot Like Birds - Truly Random Code
[00:28] <%Salazar> Is another band i highly adore

I've had that conversation in real life once. Snobs, first time at Wacken and think they know everything about metal.

You know what? I'm perfectly okay with Maiden, Priest, Sabbath, Metallica, etc. being called "classic metal" and categorized differently than the newer metal bands that "Salazar" listed. There is a pretty big difference, and I much prefer the former. In fact, I've even told people that I'm a fan of the classic metal bands of the 80s, but most of the newer stuff alienates me what with the absence of melody and vocalists who deliberately try not to sound human. In fact, there are two different satellite radio channels in the U.S. for the two different kinds of "metal" -- classic vs. more modern -- so I don't think I'm alone.

But saying Slayer isn't metal is just downright stupid. Supertramp is classic rock. And Slayer ain't anything like Supertramp.

It is sad but that is how it is. For many 16 - 19 year olds the 80s were a really REALLY long time ago. They don't have anything in common at all with that decade. Many of them grew up with Korn, Slipknot and Linkin Park as the big bands/heroes of their age . I think a lot of the people into all those horrible metal core genres just finds classic metal and rock so incredibly old fashioned. Hey, they gotta have their own revolt too I guess right...

I think it's normal, back in 1986 when I first listen to The Wall (1979) I thought it was ancient history, not to mention the early 70's and even more the 60's.. Dinosaurs, not worthy to even be mentioned, that's how I was feeling!!

Time counts differently for those ages and it's even a beautiful thing.

EDIT: things changed a bit after 1990 when I experienced the passing of a decade, but still it was not before 2000 :D that I realised how the time passes quickly. Now 30's seem understandable and some times even millennia ago ain't that far to me, nor the people that different somehow..
