Old guys like me when they plan to head out for a night of drinking after not getting much sleep the night before.

I could use a night of drinking. Just flew to San Francisco and back in one day. Alas, I will probably just have dinner with the fam and pass out on the couch at 8:30 while trying to watch last Sunday's "Dexter" on the DVR. At some point, whatever coolness I may have had -- and it wasn't much -- left me forever.

The following albums were released during the span of a single year, 1975:

Black Sabbath, Sabotage
Fleetwood Mac, Fleetwood Mac
Aerosmith, Toys in the Attic
Kiss, Alive!
Bruce Springsteen, Born to Run
Led Zeppelin, Physical Graffiti
Pink Floyd, Wish You Were Here
Queen, A Night at the Opera

My goodness.

EDIT: See if you can top THAT with any other year.

Super easy.. 1967

Procol Harum -title album
Pink Floyd -The Piper at the Gates of Dawn
The Doors -title album
The Doors -Strange Days
Tim Buckley -Goodbye & Hello
John Mayall -A Hard Road
Jimi Hendrix -Are you Experienced
Jimi hendric -Axis: Bold as Love
Cream -Disraeli Gears
Buddy Rich -Big Swing Face
Velvet Underground & Nico -title album
Ten Years After -title album
The Grateful Dead -title album
Nina Simone -Nina Simone Sings the Blues
Jefferson Airplane -Surrealistic Pillow
The Beatles -Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band

Not even close. I'd put each of the 1975 albums I listed (except Kiss) ahead of ALL of these except Sgt. Pepper.

By the way, I think the Hendrix studio albums are way overrated. He blew people away with his live shows, but the studio songs lose a lot of that magic. Voodoo Chile (Slight Return) is the exception that proves the rule.

I despise the Velvet Underground, and I don't think I've ever hated a band more than The Grateful Dead.

1969 probably comes closest -- Sabbath s/t, first two Zeppelln albums, Abbey Road, others -- but I still think it falls just short. By the way, I left out two important Dylan albums from 1975, but I'm not a huge Dylan fan.

It's a matter of taste, for instance, I don't like Sgt. Pepper's that much and I agree with the Hendrix argument.
My list was based mostly on the objective importance of those albums and I can't think a bigger year than 1967 in that regard.

For me, 1980 is the one that springs to mind.

Black Sabbath - Heaven and Hell
Motorhead - Ace of Spades
Iron Maiden - Iron Maiden
AC/DC - Back in Black
Scorpions - Animal Magnetism
Ozzy - Blizzard of Ozz
Judas Priest - British Steel
MSG - MSG

And a bunch of other albums which whilst do not matter so much to me, add to the year. E.g Wheels of Steel.

In case people are interested, we did The best year of metal music four years ago.

I went for 1984:

Iron Maiden - Powerslave
Rush - Grace under Pressure
Judas Priest - Defenders of the Faith
Dio - The Last in Line
Metallica - Ride the Lightning
Queensryche - The Warning

I am much more into older music (and other genres) now, so I am not sure what I would do. Still a great list.

When it comes to albums, 1969 is the year that springs to mind for me.

The Beatles - Abbey Road
Frank Zappa - Uncle Meat
Frank Zappa - Hot Rats
Jethro Tull - Stand Up
King Crimson - In the Court of the Crimson King
The Kinks - Arthur
Pink Floyd - More
Procol Harum - A Salty Dog
The Rolling Stones - Let It Bleed
The Velvet Underground - The Velvet Underground
The Who - Tommy

... and then CCR had three albums and Zeppelin two, all of which I like quite a bit. And more.

Agreed they are "important" albums. I simply could live quite happily without hearing any of them again.

When it comes to albums, 1969 is the year that springs to mind for me.

That year sprang to my mind too, and is probably the year I would have picked if put on the spot without thinking. Then I saw an Amazon list for 1975 and audibly said "holy shit." Queen's magnum opus, the Boss's magnum opus, Aerosmith's best album, arguably the best Zep album, arguably Floyd's best album, and what many think is Sabbath's best album. I mean...great googly moogly.

P.S. See these lists linked below. I love Digital Dream Door. Not definitive or anything, but certainly thought-provoking:
