I'm a Mac fanboy and frankly I find this PC v. Mac fucking retarded. But I find Window's or "PCs" response even more so retarded. Walking into a store and getting a PC that supposedly does what a Mac does for less than 900 dollars? give me a fucking break...

At the end of the day it depends what you want to do. Macs have always been workstations, finally breaking into the mainstream market with the iMacs. Prior to that you would only find them in schools, movie/music studios and the occasional graphic design artist's loft.

As for the Window's based answered you mentioned, the only reason they exist is thanks to Apple making fun of them. That is how the market works... competition. So the way I see it it is a win-win situation for the consumer. Apple makes fun of windows for not having affordable or bundled media software... before you know it you have in house and third party developers making them.

In the end, nothing to cry about either way.

It is a retarded thing at the end of the day, it's each to their own and it always will be. I've used Mac's, PC's and Linux based machines, I found Linux the smoothest, Windows/PC the most easy to use (and covered the widest variety of tasks) and Mac's to... well, I didn't like it at all.

The arguments I've seen for Mac's from actual users rather than the ad's is that they look pretty, personally I always found Windows 7 Aero to look far nicer than a mac from day one, hell I even found Linux to look nicer.. but as above, everyone has their own preference.

The bit you said about "Doing what a mac does" ... well, that's intriguing me.. because what exactly is different about what they all do? A discussion was had on IRC a few weeks back I believe in which the conclusion about mac's (not from myself) came to be that you are basically paying for it to look pretty.... They also have one major downside: If something breaks, the whole system needs sending back... Sure, the same can be true of PC's depending on what breaks but, things like webcams etc are usually going to be USB not built in.

Apples (no pun intended) and Pears at the end of the day.

Unfortunately I am not literate enough on the matter to draw my own conclusions. My computer literacy is that of a high school freshman.

BUT from what I've heard my nerdy IT friends say is the following. Window OS and it's products are far and above for businesses. Remember the Apple ad making fun of "PCs" for making great spreadsheets? Well that's true, windows and their "OFFICE" products are actually really good for that... BUSINESS. But when is Little Timmy, age 8, going to use Access? or Excel even? probably never. They are great programs, way better than Apples Database and spreadsheet programs.

What else do PCs do better than Macs? Customization. A screen from here, a tower from there, a CPU from overthere, etc. You can build it however the hell you want, Macs... not so much.

What do Macs do better? Well, they have a better organized OS rather than having stupid, bloated directories. They are WAY easier for non geeks and non nerds to use. You keep boasting about Windows 7... it was a direct response and practical copycat of Mac OS X. I agree that Windows 7 is a HUGE improvement from other Windows OS. Anyway. Macs, like I said before, whether it's processing power, their nice big cinematic screens or just the quality software for both amateurs and pros that they have have been used for Film editing, music production, drawing comics, etc. There is a Computer Graphics magazine here at the community college I leafed through years ago and they had a piece on the best workstations to do CGI on and the ONLY mainstream name was Apple. That's right, No Dell, Compaq, HP, hell I don't think they even ran Windows... if that's possible. But for a "mainstream" brand like apple to be in the top 5 Workstations for CGI... pretty impressive as far as rendering and other techy crap was concerned.

Linux might be a great OS, but it is WAY too much of a niche market. The only people I've heard like it and use it are IT guys. I am yet to find a mere mortal that says, "you know what is fucking awesome?! LINUX! Gotta try it man!" I wish it the best and hope it becomes a household name in the near future.

I like... no scratch that... I LOVE my Mac, because it came with everything I wanted to make Videos. iLife was a god send. The way I can use my music from itunes and seemlessly use it in iMovie, then export everything to iDVD, etc... use pictures from iPhoto... it was AWESOME.

That's how I made this: The Fourth Lateran Council http://www.myspace.com/video/onhell8/fourth-lateran-council/3777438

And was able to clean up this older video from high school: The Julius Caesar project http://www.myspace.com/video/onhell8/fourth-lateran-council/3777438

So Why do I like Macs? it lets people with good ideas but little technical know-how be creative. If  only I knew how to read and write music I'd do more with Garage Band.

Heh, I'd say windows is more accessible than a mac for the average user, but that's just me and ofc everyone will find different experiences. I find Windows very easy to get what you would need as a 'basic' user out of it. I don't have office installed, and I am fairly 'techy', and at uni we used purely mac's and linux machines, but whilst they ran smoother (mostly due to them being uni machines with very little on them and very high specs) I found them very frustrating.

I'm not trying to boast about 7, In some ways its a step back (far too restrictive unless you turn off the UAC etc) in others its a big step forwards, particularly the networking is so much smoother and self-creating rather than having to config every pc in the house 50 times.

Re: Viruses ... well, I've not had a virus in ~10 years (since i got my own pc) on windows... but remember, the more ppl use a system the more virus makers will deem it worth targetting.

Just for the record, not trying to say "WINDOWS IS BESTEST", just sharing opinions and experiences :) I think Linux is better for programming development, Mac's for media development, but with some time put into it, windows can encompass all to an acceptable degree at least.

I'd say a Windows based PC is a more AFFORDABLE option for basic users. You can buy a decent laptop for 400 dollars for just the casing, windows, RAM and integrated wifi antena. Then you can just DOWNLOAD everything else. That's what I did with my mom's new laptop. Downloaded Open office, firefox, Avast Anti-virus, Malwarebytes for Malware, etc, etc, etc. So that was awesome.

Of course if you're a diehard gamer, Windows is best.

That is up for debate as well. HALO was originally going to release on Macs until Microsoft bought Bungie outright. Though to be fair, prior to that no real options, and since Halo never released natively for Mac... hard to say what it would have done for the gaming aspect of that OS.

DD3 for arcade is HORRENDOUS! the NES ports for them were great. DD2 is better than its arcade counterpart as it is a full game with 9 missions rather than the four for arcade. DD3 for arcade was nothing but a quarter eater and not even a good one (like Golden Axe). However you can find DD1 arcade remakes for the Gameboy Advance and others that are pretty good. It is a hard game to find though.

LOVE that trilogy :D The third one was... different, in a good way, I liked the "choose your path" gameplay. gave it more variety. I missed the original characters, but still very cool... hmm, I just might give it another spin this weekend :)

Bimmy and Jimmy?!?!?!?

Anyway, I just beat LttP and am now working on Ocarina. Vacation is good!
