Let's try and get 1,000,000 replies to this post

Don't even get me started on the ridiculously overbiased PC vs Mac adverts... which should really be called Windows vs MacOSX, as you can run MacOSX/Linux on a PC aswell  ::)

The whole "there are only X viruses for Mac's, there are 123719854237568 for PC's" ... yeah, know why? because no one uses the bloody things so theres no point in targetting them. If everyone swapped to Mac's I garauntee there would be more viruses.
There was an advert of "PC's need this program for video editing, this one for sound editing, this one for pictures, this one for....  ...Mac's have iLife" ... Actually, windows now has fairly good editing packages available without issues, and the other benefit to having several specialised programs over one collective piece? THEY ARE SPECIALISED.

The one I used to hear from mac users all the time was how much prettier it looked.. really? Grey with green/red/yellow dots? Windows 7 looks miles better, esp with Aero turned on.

Lastly, far more software available for PC over mac's. Mac fanboys are as bad as metallica fanboys or nintendo fanboys, there isn't really such a thing as a windows fanboy... most windows users still hate it (even if it is just the 'cool' thing to do) but they also acknowledge its the best available option.

Linux... well I like Linux, but you'll get virtually no software/games for it and being entirely free there is no support, so companies will tend to go for windows/mac's so they have some legal ground should there be a failure that loses a lot of work.

I always thought macs had a futuristic look to them. I like the look. There plenty of great apple products out there though.

I've been running a Linux OS for years and there is software for everything I ever need software for. And it's nearly all free. I have not booted my laptop into Win7 in months, I have no need. Yes, games are a little on the thin side (I'm not a gamer, so it doesn't bother me) but there is games available (Doom3 is open sourced).

As for support, well it depends on what you mean by none. Yes, there is no call centre for support like MS and Apple no doubt have, but there is support - you just have to know where to look. Also, companies can actually buy support for their Linux OS. Were I work, we have two Red-Hat servers and we pay for support from Red-Hat direct - not that we have actually used it, but it's there.

It's also worth mentioning that roughly 2 out every three servers worldwide run a Linux OS, so it is not really true to say companies go for Win/Mac. And more often than not, data loss and/or downtime is almost always going to be down to hardware or users (unless off course you have a Windows sever and you have to reboot it weekly due to MS updates - Linux updates do not require reboots as often as that. Nowhere near that.).

The servers we run that have the least amount of downtime is our iSeries and our Red-Hat servers. Our iSeries is the single most important piece of kit we have, we can't afford for it to be down - and it can stay up for several years without problems. Which is why they can cost in excess of £40k.

Linux support (in terms of paid for, so something to claim liability from etc) has gone up in recent years, and yes, almost all servers are linux because it is far less system intensive.

I am a gamer, even if I don't play much atm, so even at times when I've considered Linux.. it's been a no go.

Just as a heads up: Except for moderator actions (i.e. deleting spam posts, banning spammers, taking care of trolls etc), I will be ceasing my activity on this board from next week onward until further notice.

Why will you be ceasing your activity on this board from next week onward until further notice?
(that was a more direct question, but you don't have to explain if you don't want to of course)

Because I have very little spare time at the moment. I have not enjoyed posting here very much lately, for reasons that are mostly my business, so I'd rather spend that spare time doing other things. I am not going to leave permanently, and I will return when my schedule loosens up a bit.

As I said, I will keep up my moderator duties, so don't hesitate to contact me about any issues the same way as before.

If I had to guess, based on the three or four times Perun has said the same: school or school related items.

Less likely, but still probable: planning to annex the Sudetenland.

I already had such an idea.
If it's your business only I'm afraid we can't make it better for you (until further notice ;) ).

Hope to keep in touch via Facebook. Cheers, mate.

I was hoping not to discuss this in public. ;)

No seriously, the reason why I have so little time is indeed because my university schedule is quite crammed, and I want to get a number of things done by the end of the year.

A little distance may already do the trick. Although I'm curious to know what gave you the idea.

I felt you already took that distance. Same with Dom as well.

Anyway, I must be going to get some winter tyres under my car.  :)
