That was one of the choices but I didn't have time to get the book and I already had 1984 so I just picked that one. BNW is definitely next on my To read list. As soon as I'm done with Cat's Cradle.

Reminds me that I should also read Brave New World. Will anyone please remind me to do that when I submit my PhD thesis (hopefully in July)?

We will, but will you be able to read after the drinking binge I am sure you are planning?

Yes, after a day or two of hangover  :D Or when I'm going to Tanzania in August. When flying, books are essential.

Today is the last day I can register to get some tickets for the London Olympics. Part of me is thinking that as the venue itself is around 20 minutes train journey away, I should try to get a ticket or two - it only happens that close to you once in a lifetime.

But there's part of me that thinks - meh.

Did you try for them in the end? I went through the same thought process and came down on the side of meh. If my friends win tickets I could end up going anyway.

No, but I think I may well be kicking myself. Unless I would of got tickets for the 100m final or 4x400 final (typically the last day and typically a 'eck of a lot of money) I'm happy watching it on the TV.

I lost my betting ticket, in which I will probably win :(

Barcelona and Real Madrid are competing in "who have the biggest DRAMA QUEENS". The first half belongs here in madness rather than in the football thread, because all those theatrics have fuck all to do with football.

I did not actually watch the game but I did hear things about this. Plus I heard that Barca players kept hounding the ref.

Two solutions:
1. You go down injured you must leave the field of play for at least 2 or 3 minutes to get treated. No ifs, no buts.
2. Only the captain can talk to the ref. End of story. If the captain is a goalie, then a nominated outfield player is the only player to talk to the ref.

Simple, really.

I'm going to keep boring you guys with Canadian politics.

The NDP wave in Canada (or as some commentators are calling it, the "Orange Crush") seems to be real. My riding, which was considered a safe Conservative riding when the campaign began, is now projected to go NDP. It should be noted that the Member of Parliament here isn't just some minor backbencher; our MP is Peter MacKay, the last leader of the federal Progressive Conservatives, Minister of Defense, and generally considered the 2nd most powerful member of the federal Conservative party. Going from safe to a loss would be a serious fucking deal.

To put it in comparison, it's like John Boehner losing his seat in Ohio, or Labour knocking out George Osborne.

LC, Canadians don't care about Canadian politics.  :innocent:

Seriously, do you think turnout will be 60 per cent?

On my side of the country (or at least my part of it) there is not a lot of heat.
Part of that is a high number of disaffected voters.
Another part is the fact this is an NDP riding with a popular incumbent at a time when the NDP is riding high.
I hope that translates into a good turnout here — people thinking they have someone to vote for.
But I'm not so sure.

In my riding, which as I noted is having a huge NDP upswing, there is a lot of voting going on. Our early voting was up by like 40%, and it's not going to get any slower. I'm heading out early Monday morning to vote. Very early.

Quebec is even crazier right now. I think we'll see 62-63%; maybe as much as 65% if the weather is good everywhere.

I think in a safe NDP riding, things will be slow. Same with a safe Conservative riding. Can I ask what riding you are in?

This is going to be a swing election, it seems. A lot of people in districts that are in play will vote. Yours probably isn't one of them. To me, as a political observer, this has been a fantastically interesting week.
