To get a contract on a mobile in the UK, you could be looking at £25 or more per month. And the calls are something like £0.10 per minute. I get my mobile supplied and paid for by work, so I can't say for sure how much it costs as I have not had a mobile bill in years - but it something like that. You could opt for pay-as-you go, but that is still upwards of £0.10 per minute talk time.
But the big charge is when you call either from one mobile network to another - or call a mobile from a landline. That costs a fair bit and a lot of people are reluctant to call mobiles for this reason.
And as landlines cost nothing to make calls to other landlines, mobiles are only really used for texting on the whole.
