Nope. He was the singer of the band whose bass player was Dylan Smith. :)
Close enough. :p
it was still more pleasant having Murderdolls or Trivium (GMETID and DOD 03) open for my favourite band.
Trivium were main support in 2006 with Lauren opening. I was a big Trivium fan back then, in my early years of Metal. They were pretty disappointing though, but had earned the right to be there.

Trivium is a fine entry metal band.

I think my favourite opener remains Alice Cooper.

Ruling out festival line ups, the only decent bands I ever saw open for Maiden were Megadeth in 99, Slayer in 2000 and Motorhead in 2007*

* I think this was a Maiden headline show but it was outdoors in the Stadio Olipmico and there was about 5 bands on the bill so could have been a festival.

I wish I could have seen Helloween, Queensrÿche or Dio open for them.

If a bigger band opens, then we’ll just be complaining about higher ticket costs because that band will need to be paid more. Sure we got Ghost a few years ago but I don’t particularly think Ghost got paid much. I think it was more advertising for themselves and to broadcast to a wider audience.

Maiden doesn't need an opener to sell out.

A lot of people my age will have been into Trivium when they were teenagers. I was already listening to Metallica, Killswitch Engage, Avenged Sevenfold, Linkin Park and Limp Bizkit but when 'Pull Harder on the Strings of your Martyr' came out in 2005 it really moved things along for me. What a song that was for a 15 year old to hear. They had the world at their feet back then. Their set at Download Festival that year - opening mainstage - is probably one of the most legendary performances Donington Park has ever seen, and Trivium haven't lived up to it since. In 2006 they got on Iron Maiden's European tour and had earned their place on that stage, but by the time the tour came round things had started to unravel. Their management and record label wanted to push them as the next Metallica so Matt Heafy went from lauding In Flames as his greatest influence (that's how I was introduced to In Flames) to a year a later kissing James Hetfield's ass. The vocal style changed to drop the Metalcore screaming and their third album was a bit of a mess. They tried to sound like Metallica and failed, and it's never been the same since for them. Interestingly, Avenged Sevenfold also changed from a Metalcore sound to a more mainstream sound for their third album and ultimately became one of the biggest acts in modern Metal. They've headlined Download Festival twice now and Trivium have plateaued ever since their third album. I guess it was a case of too much too young for Trivium.

I have seen some really good bands open for Maiden: Helloween (in 1996 and in 1998; the second time I thought they were better than Maiden), Megadeth (1999), Gamma Ray (2003), Anthrax (2013)...

Even though they are not my cup of tea, I found Spiritual Beggars (2000), Entombed (2000), Trivium (2006), Avenged Sevenfold (2008), Airbourne (2011), Shinedown (2017) or Killswitch Engage (2018) to be pretty good too.

Murderdolls and Lauren Harris were dreadful.

Best opener I saw for a Maiden show was Arch Enemy in 2003. I had never heard them before and was pretty blown away. All of the nepotism bands sucked. Ghost was wannabe-satanic garbage, in my opinion.

Maiden should drop the opening bands and start doing 3 hour shows.

Because of the amount of energy Maiden puts into their performance and Bruce's singing, a 3 hour show would be too exhausting for them so it will never happen.
