I recall Adrian saying he had it as an idea and was pretty surprised it was put on the album as is ... I think they could have made it more moody/atmospheric to convey someone/something floating aimlessly in space and it would have had more of a punch. I also wish they would have put it as a separate track so it is easily skipable
 
Yea, Adrian presented it as a demo to be worked on in the studio and Steve decided to just leave it as is.

I think it would've been better if they kept some elements from the demo (mostly the guitars and the bass synth) and rework everything else to give it more atmosphere. I wasn't surprised when I read it was a demo because it does sound like one.

Pretty fucking bad idea really. It just didn't really work that well., Final Frontier the track would have been OK with a 5 second into or no intro at all..Wouldn't have made much sense. Satellite just takes up time.
 
I'm glad they did it. I'll take an experiment that might not work (I thought it was good, despite the demo gripe) over a half assed rehash (TFF) any day.

I agree, when I first heard the album it made me think 'woah, what the fuck do we have here?' and I'll always appreciate that from Maiden despite the fact that its over long and doesn't do much after the initial impact. Its not anything worth listening to if you can help it but I thought it worked well as a live opener and showed that a Maiden album is like a box of chocolates; you never know what you're gonna get (although you have a fair idea)

Satellite 15 is one of my favorite moments on the album. Can't say the same for the title track.
 
Yea, Steve seems to have a thing for the unfinished. Same could be said about the Dance of Death production.

I can respect it but the results aren't always great. On the other hand, Maiden aren't the type of band to do a lot of tweaking in terms of their song writing and I think that spontaneity usually works for them.
