And lives to tell the world about that surreal supernatural encounter. As someone who wildly believes in the supernatural, I find that ending the song with him running away alive and getting to tell his story gives it a feel that the tale is real, which makes it all the more creepy and unsettling.

To each their own. It's little more than a theatrical campy tale to my ears, which is good, but not as good as like 84 other Maiden songs. The bit where he runs away is a bit messy too, and my least favorite part of the song, but doesn't bring it down any.

I agree with these parts, but Book of Souls is my favourite of all Janick's songs and overall one of my favourite Maiden songs.

TBOS is a fantastic song too, but DOD is a classic that it's up there with the material from the 80's and it is the best Janick song IMO, which cannot be repeated again.
