Iron Maiden Statistics

I, myself am quite a statto.  I like to look at figures and try and take meaning from them... if not for anything more than a trivial interest.  I know that Onhell, Perun and a few others are interested in these kind of statistics and with a little bit of help from you guys, this can be a thread buzzing with interesting statistics.

*NB* Some of these facts are not concrete and application of opinion must be used, for example the definition of a chorus may differ for each individual.
*1 No words sang, or spoken, by a vocalist over a particular period of time
*2 A line or group of lines repeated at intervals in a song.
For example, in "Afraid to Shoot Strangers", there is no chorus because the words all follow after one another and there is no verse, so to speak.
*3 Help from ]Forostar (pre-AMOLAD songs)
*4 A big thanks to Albie (NPFTD - AMOLAD).  Number of words calculated using Microsoft Word.  Discounting repeated lines (choruses and verses)
*5 Entirely compiled by Forostar
*6 Entirely compiled by Perun
*7 Entirely compiled by Perun
*8 Entirely compiled by Albie
"I (Albie) have compiled these stats from the length of tracks reported by the CD upon insertion - using MusicMatch Jukebox. The Enhanced versions are there because there is an extra track on the first three albums. The last track is always the time from the original album, as the time reported (as above) seems to add an extra minute or two because of the enhanced features (I would think)."
*9 Entirely compiled by Albie
*10 Entirely compiled by Forostar.  Uncertainty lies over the issue of "Mother Russia" as some claim it was played live in Phoenix.
*11 Entirely compiled by Perun.  Every tour is included, even if the song was on the setlist only once (such as Run To The Hills). The pre-Iron Maiden tours are comprehended as one tour, Fear Of The Dark and Real Live Tours are two tours, just as Gimme Ed... Till I'm Dead and Dance Of Death.
By the way, Iron Maiden, The Number Of The Beast and Hallowed Be Thy Name are the only songs that have been on every setlist since their release (The Trooper was not played on the Somewhere In Time tour).
*12 Not including different formats of the same release.  Eg, "Live After Death" video and audio counted as one release.
*13 Entirely compiled by Sinister Minister X.  Average length of all Maiden studio tracks, including b-sides: 5:29

Interesting, would you not suggest that "Where Eagles Dare" would be chorus-less as well?

Albie, that's where personal opinion comes into it.  When you see the lyrics wriiten out, it appears as though there is no chorus, just four verses, but when you listen to the song, the lines with similar melodies appear to be choruses:

"No one should go where eagles dare"
"No one should fly where eagles dare"
"They've got to try to save the day"
"They chose to fly, Where Eagles Dare"

Well, first of all, Losfer Words shouldn't be on the list of longest instrumental sections.  Besides, Nicko calls a count in...so it's not entirely instrumental. :D

And I think you need to adjust your idea of a chorus slightly.  A chorus is always put between verses (with sometimes a chorus at the beginning, before the first verse), and is more often than not shorter than the verse.  However, it does not have to have repeated words.  A repeated melody line, different from the verse, will do.  So 'Where Eagles Dare' has a chorus, even though it is only two lines long, and the 'Where Eagles Dare' part is the only repeated phrase.  But that's my opinion, anyway.

Oh, and Conor...please take the four instrumentals off the chorus-less list.  Or I'll make lists such as 'Verseless songs', 'Songs without a definite article in the lyrics', 'Songs which don't display Paul/Bruce's vocals well' and 'Songs on which Nicko makes the largest vocal contribution'. :innocent:

Point taken... if anybody makes such lists I would be happy to incorporate them into my first post with a sidenote indicating their contribution.

Fortunes of war has a chorus, doesn't it?

"Fortunes of war...Fortunes of war...fortunes of war... no pain anymore"

Or is that once in the song? It's been a while since I put on the x-Factor

That statement is like saying Angel and The Gambler drags on 'a wee bit more than necessary'.

On the other hand, I don't know whether Fortunes of War should count as chorusless or not.  As oghar pointed out, the 'Fortunes of war' bit is indeed used repeatedly in one section, rather than throughout the song.  But there are breaks in the section with it, so I don't know whether it should count as a chorus proper or not.

I have a suggestion, most words in a song (what shouldn't count is repeated lines). This idea comes from an interview I heard many a year ago where Al Stewart claimed he wrote more words in "The Year of the Cat" than Lionel Richie wrote in one album.[sup]1[/sup] Undoubtedly, Rime of the Ancient Mariner will top the list - straight after I heard this interview, I compared this with Al Stewart's effort - Maiden won. ;)

But this is a mere suggestion.

[sup]1[/sup]Lionel Richie was big at the time and Al Stewart was having a small revival. Hence the bitter-sweet comment.

OK, I'll have a bash at the rest - sometime tomorrow. I'll post here with the results.

Cheers Albie, I'll post mine as soon as I get them calculated.

How about the longest intro (instrumental parts before first spoken/sung words)?  Not counting Nicko's counting, that is.  If anyone cares, I could start compiling some CDs, but I don't think I can do them all.  (Woosed out).

OK, I'll have a bash at the rest - sometime tomorrow. I'll post here with the results.
I have started on this and am currently working my way back from A Matter of life and Death and am on Brave New World.

The Method I am using to do this as as follows:

i) Put the lyrics for the whole album into a Word document (lyrics will be obtained from Darklyrics.com - fairly accurate are the lyrics here). A Matter of Life and Death I got from Mav's threads in the commentary forum as they are not on Darklyrics yet.
ii) Select one song at a time and put into another Word doc
iii) Compare with the lyrics on the CD booklet and revise accordingly (all repeated verses are put in as they are printed in the booklet).
iv) Select the properties option from the file menu and go to the stats tab and not down the word count.
v) Remove all repeated lines and repeat step (iv).
vi) Once all the stats are in place  for all the lyrics, I will double check the top 10 before repeated lines are removed and after repeated lines are removed and count manually to ensure accuracy.

Fortunately, I am not at work this week and have the time to do this. :D

Thinking about this topic, I would like to say that what you’re providing us with is not statistics per se. It is data and that’s different. Statistics would consist into looking the data in order to determine say, if the average number of words changes from one album to the other or if lyrics written by Bruce are longer the ones Steve wrote…
It requires some maths … ;)

Very true JackKnife, it is just data. Stats are:

1st column are words overall
2nd words minus the repeated words
third is the difference
and last is the percentage of decrease.

Tailgunner - 152 - 119 - 33 - 21.71%
Holy Smoke - 276 - 220 - 56 - 20.29%
No Prayer for the Dying - 119 - 119 - 0 - 0.00%
Public Enema Number One - 195 - 145 - 50 - 25.64%
Fates Warning - 202 - 144 - 58 - 28.71%
The Assassin - 162 - 148 - 14 - 8.64%
Run Silent Run Deep - 273 - 203 - 70 - 25.64%
Hooks in You - 257 - 163 - 94 - 36.58%
Bring You Daughter…… - 155 - 137 - 18 - 11.61%
Mother Russia - 107 - 97 - 10 - 9.35%

I've done for each album since (and including) No Prayer.....

Some people have too much time on their hands to generate all this (rather useless) data. But I suppose that it keeps you lot out of mischief, eh?  :D

Can anyone supply me with the number of times Bruce has said "Scream for me <name of the place>" on stage and how it compares between his first tenure with Maiden, his solo career and after the reunion? Thanks!  :innocent:
