... while it's gunning for epic status, the lyrics don't actually tell the story, convey feeling or drama very well. If at all. It's like a series of bullet points about the story, not unlike the lyrics for Alexander.

Exactly. Both songs are beautiful and instrumentally they have an epic feel, but the lyrics don't live up to it.

To Tame a Land is my favorite song on Piece of Mind, but I'm not surprised at this point to see it gone at this point. Has never been a favorite of Maidenfans.

To Tame a Land-Alexander the Great comparison is one I've made in the past as well, they are very similar in terms of their strengths and weaknesses. Incredible instrumentals with melodic excellence and a great atmosphere; very "summary" like, unimaginative lyrics; and weak vocal melodies.

Still Life and To Tame A Land are mine, closely followed by Die With Your Boots On.
Latter gone already, so I'm not surprised either.

To Tame a Land and Alex are definitely similar in many ways, although I don’t think the gulf in quality between instrumental and vocal parts is quite as wide. To Tame a Land is more of a mixed bag with some cool vocal parts and some cool instrumental parts, but neither really reach any sort of zenith. The best part of the song is probably the big buildup in the middle (the time has come...). Bruce’s performance and delivery is spectacular.

I always saw Piece of Mind as an album ends with Still Life. Even as a kid the rest felt like supplemental material. It’s good stuff, even Quest For Fire has a lot of redeemable traits, but when I think about what I like about the album it’s mostly in the first 6 songs.

Alexander and Dune are definitely in the same ballpark in terms of structure, feel and subpar lyrics, but musically Alexander has a touch more...grandeur maybe? Dune seems a little remote in comparison, like I’m watching from a distance instead of being inside.

Acacia was a case of Steve welding what were two different song together and to me it shows. It’s better, but it’s similar to The Man who Would be King.

The best parts of the song are the section before the solos and the section after the solos, imo. After that the intro and the outro. Asturias rip-off thing sounds great, but it is a rip-off nonetheless, so can't put it up there.

That's a bit harsh in my opinion. It's used as a bass line and not a lead melody, and it's given a different rhythmic feel. I think that kind of copying is OK.

Hearing a short melody in a classical piece and using it in your own work -without it being too similar - I find that cool. Unless the copied part is what your entire song is built around.

Rip-offs of the Nomad category is a whole different game however. That's not cool.

I don't have an ethical problem with it, I just wouldn't rank the copied part up high in a ranking of the best parts of that song.

I've warmed to QFF a lot over the past few years. It's a cute little OTT songlet with some catchy guitar bits.

I did not expect so many votes for TNOTB..., but I expected the votes for RTTH though - which maybe becomes a underrated song lol.

And why so many votes for ''The Prisoner''?... superb song with one of the best solos in Maiden's discography.
