TNOTB is definitely an overrated song imo. I'd much rather see them drop that one than Trooper or FOTD.

Going backwards really revealed to me how much of a step down TNoTB is from the other 80s albums. It’s a really good album and definitely deserving of classic status, but it’s missing a lot. Nicko is missed, the guitar playing is average at best, Bruce hasn’t totally found his voice yet. It sounds like a NWOBHM band that is capable of more but not quite there yet. Even the best material is often somewhat pedestrian.
Again, none of this is to say it’s a bad album and I find terms like overrated to be fairly meaningless. It’s definitely deserving of classic status. It just speaks more to the level of quality the band would achieve immediately after.
I voted for Invaders, Run To the Hills, and Gangland. All are decent tunes (Invaders is probably my favorite of the three), but they are somewhat average NWOBHM fare. RTTH is the first attempt at a catchy hit song, but they did so much better with songs like Flight of Icarus and Wasted Years.

Also want to put in the good word for Total Eclipse. Great song, awesome chorus, exciting use of dynamics. If it were on the original album, it’d prob be tied with the title track for being my favorite song. How the generic (and incomplete - missing guitar solo) Gangland made the album instead is beyond me.

There almost is one. The stuff that takes place at 2:44-2:52 sounds like the beginning of a guitar solo and then it just stops.

As much as I appreciate Nicko's work, I disagree with this wholeheartedly. Clive's performance is one of the highlights of the album. Hallowed Be Thy Name wouldn't be what it is without Clive's drum patterns.
Voted for Aces High, Flight Of Icarus, Die With Your Boots On, Still Life, Invaders, The Number Of The Beast, Run To The Hills, Gangland and Total Eclipse.
